A lone figure strode through the Forest purposefully - this was not unusual in a place like the Forbidden Forest, where dark deeds performed by dark beings were in fact quite common. Her pale skin glowed in the patches of moonlight that streaked through the trees, her jet black hair fallen out of its pleat and framing her face in unwanted waves. Her muggle attire was torn and dirty, and she had grazes and cuts on the milky flesh that was showing, but she showed no sign of slowing down.
She had just left one battle scene and was moving to another, but had chosen to walk to the castle in case she found any of her allies to take with her, or any of the enemy trying to find their way to Danawi, in which case she would eliminate the threat. She had managed to overcome her ultimate desire - to see the death of a Vampire who so blemished her past - to take her power to a higher level, working with others for a greater purpose. Although she realised that now was no time for personal vendettas, the thought of Ace lying there, waiting for Adia to bring his death, was still a temptation she knew she would have to fight every inner fire to resist.
But either way, no matter what she chose to do with the endless night that now lay before her, she knew her destiny was formed tonight.

Red was sitting cross-legged on a tree trunk, sitting completely still and in all-consuming silence as her crimson eyes watched the sometime silent forest around her. She had left the Lair to practice the small amount of magic she found she had some remnants of once she had been Sired, although she had executed none of her intention. Apparently the old she could not be vanquished completely by a Vampire's bite. She had already met up with said Vampire only a few hours ago, travelled to the Lair to establish herself there, bathe to rid herself of the marks of travel and then escaped into the seemingly endless darkness that lurked within the forest.
Both of them had changed. They were both older, wiser but strangely they seemed to have changed positions. Once Acerbus had been the more Vampiric one and Red the mortal. Now it seemed that Acerbus had settled more into the lifestyles of the mortals whereas Red viewed most as the pathetic race that her existence most unfortunately depended on.
Except for one.
A scent rose in the air and Scarlett's head turned to the direction in was coming from, wondering about the slightly familiar scent. She sat there, eyes closed and almost completely hidden with the darkness and shadow when a memory and a person flowed easily into her mind. Silently pleased, Red uncrossed her legs and slipped noiselessly off the fallen log, the only sound her feet brushing slightly against the leaves that had surrounded the base.
Moving as only a Vampire could, a catlike movement that even her travelling cloak that covered most of her body seemed to conform to, Red settled herself comfortably against the trunk of a tree and waited for Adia to appear in front of her.

Curtesy of Danawi, Adia's enhanced senses picked up on movement in the pitch blackness ahead. She stopped in her tracks, her wide black orbs searching the nothingness for some clue as to who lay beyond; but to no avail.
Taking in a deep breath, she closed her eyes - generally an unwise move in a place like the Forest, but right now Adia needed to depend on a sixth sense. It took her several moments to completely relax, as she was always alert and on edge, and didn't like being any other way; but as she closed down her mind to all external influences, she heard the empty, hollow, unchannelable whispers that could only come from the mind of a Vampire. Instantly, Adia thought it must be him, Ace, escaped from his magical bind - but no. The senses she was now getting were feminine, graceful... she heard a purring whisper in her ear, and all she could see inside her mind was blinding, bleeding, red.
Red.
Adia's eyes flew open, unable to believe in what her senses were telling her. She resumed her pace and made a beeline for where she now felt irresistably pulled towards, her hair and shreds of clothes streaking out behind her as she strode forwards. She came once again to an abrupt halt - leaning casually but expectantly against a trunk was a Vampiress, the epitome of a dark beauty with her raven hair and corseted body and flashing, bright red eyes.
It was only her eyes that Adia recognised, and yet it was enough. "Red." she stated, almost bewilderingly. She shook her head slowly, not able to believe the sight before her eyes.

Red smiled although it seemed that it couldn't quite touch her eyes. She crossed her arms over her chest and cocked her head to one side, surveying the gorgeous girl in front of her. She had grown older and there was more than the crackle of elemental power that whirled around her. There was much more than that, some other power had attached itself to her. Red closed her eyes and her hair changed smoothly from root to tip of the coppery red that it had once been.
"It's hardly as impressive as the magic I once had, but I daresay there is more power in these fingers," She raised one or two from where they rested on her arm to demonstrate. "wield more physical power than I used to believe." She caught the bewildered stare that Adia was giving her and Red stepped forward, shaking her hair out so it swung over her eyes and settled there, both softening the image she was projecting and making it sharper.
"Adia," She uttered the name at last. The only mortal besides her twin who had ever truly meant something to Red. Scarlett kept moving until she was standing in front of Adia arms still crossed and observing the girl.
"What's the matter, honey?" She smiled a little and looked into those bottomless black orbs. "Am I too good to be true?"

As Red's hair lightened to the fiery red it had once been, the Vampiress stepped forward, a clear attempt at breaking down the barriers that were likely to exist between two people who had been apart for so many years, especially when they had been walking such different paths.
But she needn't have bothered - something inside Adia, buried deep, deep down, suddenly soared at the sight of the only friend she had ever had. There had always been something infinitely dark in both of them, a demon they had both chosen to embrace rather than to fight, and it was the kind of connection that could never go away, and nobody else could understand. As Adia percieved, her friend had not changed that much - her lifestyle might be different, she no longer looked the same and, granted, she didn't even have a soul anymore... but the connection, the unspoken bond between the pair, was undoubtedly still there.
Adia's pale, wan face suddenly split into the kind of smile that can only be shared between two people who set themselves apart from the rest - a secret, knowing smile.
"You always were, Red," said Adia softly, her black eyes locked with Red's. She, too, cocked her head to the side, surveying her friend with muted warmth. "So what, in Merlin's name, brings you into my life once again?"

"Were our lives not always wound around each other's?" Red asked rhetorically, not needing an answer because both of them already knew it. She returned the smile Adia gave her, a twinge of warmth reaching her eyes now. The same connection, the sudden leap of the stomach and the burning inside that symbolised the fusing of the two again - if not souls then some substance that had allowed the pair to be forever connected - suddenly took place in Red's body and her eyes, that had somehow ignored the rips and scratches that covered Adia beforehand, appeared magically in front of Red.
Wondering if what Acerbus had been saying beforehand about Adia had anything to do with these slight injuries, Red decided it would be far more sensible to leave Acerbus in the back of her mind. This moment was purely for Red and Adia, the pair of girls who had been attracted to each other for the want of the exact same thing, shared the deep bond that not even one becoming an immortal could sever and somewhere, buried beneath many careful layers of protection and cold attitude that she had worked on for many years, was the love for the girl - with all her mortal flaws - that she drew strength from.

Adia smiled again at the Vampiress, seeing past her fangs and her cadaverous features - even seeing beyond her total hatred of the Vampirekind. Red was right; of course she was right. Despite the fact that Adia had not expected to reacquaint herself with Red tonight, it was not quite as big a shock as one might have expected. It was almost as though they were a part of each other, and every now and then they would float back into each others' lives for absolutely no reason at all - it seemed to be the curse of Magic Horizons and all who passed through its walls.
Or a blessing, thought Adia as she felt her inner fire flare up once again, feeling somewhat complete.
"Much has changed in your absence," said Adia - quietly, in case there were enemies nearby. However, Adia strongly suspected that she was not the first person Red had come across that evening - her demeanour already spoke of being re-settled in her old haunt, and this information would mean nothing to her. "Except me. I'm the same as I ever was."
Adia laughed, and crossed her arms over her chest, eyeing Red with amusement in her vast eyes. "Do you expect to stay here long?" she asked, both of them knowing she was dressing up the actual question: How long before you leave me?

"I suppose as long as Fate determines, I shall stay. It's a shame to think that after what we've been through, we are still simply playthings of Fate." Red smiled wryly but avoided making a statement of commital, in case it ended as a promise she couldn't keep. She reached out a slender arm and brushed her cool fingers gently against the firery warmth of Adia's cheek. She would've chuckled at the irony of the immense amount of difference that life seemed so intent on placing upon the both of them - if she wasn't Red. Instead, she noted every small detail she could about Adia whilst they had this moment in the Forest.
"You've changed," Red whispered softly. "Even if you don't see it, you've changed." Red could see small elements of it, lurking about Adia's person. Not that they were so huge changes that Red had noticed them straight away, but small shifts in power and personality. Beliefs and faith even. They were slight, but they were there.

Adia had never been one for self-reflection, but at Red's words she looked inside herself for the seeds of change Red said she saw. It was not difficult to see the few things that had left her, and the few things she had gained. They were minor - barely worth acknowledging - but she was touched that her old friend would recognise them.
She smiled at Red. She hadn't really expected an answer to her question - the one spoken or the one unspoken. "I hope you aren't speaking ill of Fate, now," said Adia, teasing lightly with her tone of voice. "After all, without it how would we ever know what path we were on, or what to put our trust in, or who would be with us our whole life through." She grinned, feeling something new, something she had been needing - her empty life had caused her to seek a new path, one that had led her to Danawi - but now with Red standing before her, everything she used to be suddenly meant something. She felt a passion for life, but only inspired by the undead.
"So Fate led you here," stated Adia, accepting the abstract statement unflinchingly. "But on what quest, dear Red?"

Red let her hand fall from Adia's cheek and allowed it to rest gently on her cocked hip. She raised an eyebrow at Adia's question - which was indeed, more than merited. If Red had been in the same position as Adia, she would've been firing demanding questions as though there was no tomorrow. Things, however, had changed since she was like Adia. She had obtained a scar, yet lost her mortality.
"Who knows what quest I'm on?" She asked rhetorically. "One that must concern you, it seems." A small breeze rustled through the trees around them and danced along the hem of Red's cloak. She broke her eye contact with Adia and closed the clasp over the top of her chest and looked back to Adia.
Red's crimson eyes fell to Adia's hand that was resting gently by her side and stepped forward the link hers through Adia's, as they had once before.
"Pray, infom me why you are wandering about the forest through this time of night?"

The light, the spark, that had been in Adia's eyes suddenly fizzled out - the wide abyss of darkness was all Red could see as she peered into her friend's gaze.
"I am on a quest myself," said Adia quietly. She looked over Red's shoulder, beyond the trees and the shadows and to the castle. She could almost sense the bloodshed that was occuring, the magic that was blowing apart the school, bringing the fall of their time. "I can't explain fully... there are enemies everywhere, especially here. I am part of something now - something that will change the world, hopefully for the better. You catch me at a bad time, in fact... we are in the middle of a war against the school. Right this second my associates are tearing apart the school, and soon Claire will be defeated, and the school's power lies with us."
Adia's tone was no longer empassioned, nor her features animated or expressive - she was almost mute in everything but the toneless voice that came from her mouth, telling Red what her life now consisted of. Her fate, it seemed, lay beyond what was right before her.

Red watched the rapid change in Adia, suddenly quite surprised in her friend. She had never heard Adia speak in such a monotonous tone when there was a castle to be destroyed and havoc to be wreaked. She had indeed lost her spark, her fire and it was as though she was simply a shell. Wondering exactly how she could obtain Adia's attention again to ask her exactly what was going on, she waved her hand in front of Adia's eyes, with no reaction. Red realised the immense cliche that had just taken place and she cringed a little.
She let her hand slip from Adia's and moved around to stand in front of her, watching to see any flicker of recognition from her at all, her expression still blank. Intrigued, Red raised her hand slowly and pressed it gently against Adia's cheek. When that got no reaction, Red leaned forward and kissed her gently, drawing back fairly quickly to observe the reaction, if any.

Adia barely noticed Red - she was elsewhere, viewing the battle through dreamy eyes, watching the success or demise of her fellows. She was tied by more than magic to this war - it had become her entire life. She knew, was sure, she would be nothing without it.
Suddenly, she felt Red's lips on hers and was instantly shocked back into her body. Before she could even process what had just happened, red electric sparks shot out from her body, putting a line of instantaneous defence between herself and the Vampire. Her eyes ablaze, she looked at her old friend, confusion etched in every inch of her expression.
"What the hell was that for?" she hissed, surprised to be feeling anger so quickly after confusion.

"Spontaneity. Impulse. To obtain some sort of reaction?" Red replied, completely non-plussed by the fact that she had been singed by the girl's defense mechanism. She retreated a little and perched herself on top of a nearby rock, suddenly the most catlike she had been during the course of this conversation.
Red eyed Adia firmly and pursed her lips slightly.
"Why don't you simply cast a shield around the both of us and tell me exactly what the hell is going on? You ought to give me that much, I believe. I'd do it myself, although the lack of magic I hold presently does create a slight problem." Red's voice was cold now; it seemed the two had made equal about-faces emotion-wise, Adia from pleased to angry and Red from calm to cool.

Adia surveyed Red with growing apprehension - she had not been sure what to expect from her dehumanised friend, but it had not been this. She felt the blood rushing to her head, and once again took a quick glance up to where the castle lay beyond the Forest. Shaking her head, and turning from it, she held out her hands - a golden orb seemed to float within it, and in a moment sprayed out like a fountain, covering the two of them in a glowing sheet of magic, protected, for now.
"Done," said Adia coldly. Seeing that Red had perched herself, Adia sighed and found a fallen branch to seat herself upon. She crossed her arms across her chest and fixed Red with her impassionate eyes. "So. What is it you want to know, Red?"
