"Erm... a bit longer than I've been here." she replied. "It's just like that, though, don't worry." she said reassuringly. "Only a majority of the time it takes off unexpectedly."

Sylph smiled as she rolled up her sleeves, a dangerous glint in her eye. Holdiong her wand aloft and flicking it, she concentrated on the thought of oneof the school brooms, and on the west wing of the castle.
"Accio!" she cried aloud, still concentrating - to the extent that her eyes were shut tight now. And nothing happened. Sylph opened her eyes, and narrowed them at her wand. Shrugging, she tried again.
"Accio!" she shouted. Still nothing happened. She looked apologetically at Aidana.
"Strange," she said, "I though I was - oops." Sylph had caught sight of TWO brooms heading straight for her - one a little behind the other. They zoomed across the quiddich pitch right at her head. At the last second she ducked out of the way and let them fly dangerously close to her head. Once they had done so, they halted, veered around and came back to her, stopping bare inches from her nose.
"Phew," she laughed. "Maybe I'm a little too good at summoning charms. Thank goodness I've got fast reactions. Still, here's a broom! What now?"

Aylen frowned in concentration. "Hmm...can I try riding it? Maybe I can find out what's going on."

Aidana started cracking up when she saw that Sylph had summoned two brooms. Well, at least Sylph was good with her magic. Though that didn't really help much when trying to fly.
" Nice job Sylph," she said. " Though you got a little overenthusiastic." Aidana already had her broom and put it on the ground. She motioned for Sylph to do the same. Both brooms rose to perfect height for mounting.
" Okay, you just mount the broom. Try to sit near the back, so you get balance. Don't be scared of falling off. The more confident you are, the easier it is to fly." Aidana mounted her broom and waited for Sylph to do the same.

Sylph swung one leg over her broom and sat down, shifting herself slightly until she was comfortable. She had done this only once before, when her uncle had tried to teach her after bewitching an area of common so that muggles wouldn't come near them. It hadn't worked, and they'd been forced to cut the lesson short. She placed her hands on the broom in front of her, one slightly behind the other, and leant forward to adjust her centre of gravity. Below her she felt the broom vibrate slightly, and she knew instinctively that it was ready. And so was she. She looked up at Aidana.
"Right," she said. "What now?"

Aylen mounted Makira's Firebolt and hovered until he got his balance. He flew a few laps around the pitch, getting the feel of the new broom. Mercury took off and flew beside him.

Makira watched Aylen circle the Pitch. "How's it? Doin' alright, there, Aylen? No problems?" she asked.

Aylen pulled up beside Makira. "No, not really," he replied. "I'm thinking this might have to do with the way you're handling it. If your grips aren't right, the broom might misunderstand where you want it to go."

Aidana grinned at Sylph. Her heart was beating with excitement.
" This is the best part," she told the violet haired girl.
"The kick off. Here, just place your feet firmly on the ground and push as hard as you can in the air. Point your broom in the direction you want it to go and lean forward. Basically, the harder you kick and more you lean forward, the faster it'll go." She kicked off to demonstrate and felt the wind rustle her hair. She rose about ten feet in the air and looked down at Sylph.
" You try!" she shouted down. " You'll do fine!"

Sylph stared up at Aidana where she sat mid-air hovering. Looking back down at her brrom she held it tight, though not too much so, leant into it and kicked. Hard.
Seconds later she was zooming almost vertically upwards at a tremendous rate, the wind beating in her face and whipping her purple hair around her shoulders, the sun almost blinding her. She lessened her grip, and tried to lean slightly backwards to stop the broom, directing the handle more horizontally. It obeyed her without too much trouble, although it took a couple of tries of lessening the grip before it slowed to a complete stop. From where she hovered she peered downwards, delighting in the sensation of flight. Then she realised how high she was; Aidana had risen to ten feet above the ground initially, but Sylph must've been at least fourty above her. For a split second she thought she might start feeling vertigo, but it didn't happen. She loved this.
"How was that?" she laughed down at her instructor.

Aidana was worried for a second when Sylph had risen high above her. She hoped that Sylph didn't fear heights, though now it didn't seem like it. She grinned and flew up to Sylph's level.
" That was perfect! You just need some control about how high you want to rise, but that'll come with practice. Okay, now we just want to work on straight flying, as it's the easiest. All you do basically is lean forward on your broom and kind of will it to go. You don't want to lean too much or you'll either fly down or go too fast." She demonstrated this for Sylph and flew to one of the goal posts. She turned around and came back.
" Here, fly with me this time. I'll be right behind you to help you steer."

Sylph, still wearing her dare-devil grin, grasped the broom handle in front of her, and leant forward. Almost immediately the broom moved forward. She leant into it more, and gripped harder, increasing her speed. She did this until she was outstripping the wind itself, veering with little worry towards the right goalpost. Laughing to herself she headed stright for the bar, only to pull up slightly at the last minute, circling it twice before zooming back down to the other end of the pitch and stopping once more, her plum coloured hair whipping around her shoulders.
"That wasn't so hard!" she called to Aidana cheerfully, part of her not wanting to show off, but the rest unable to resist it. It seemed she was a natural at this. Well, at level flying at least. The vertical bit might be harder. Her eyes flashed bright at Aidana, one eyebrow raised, inquiring as what to do next.

Aidana flew with Sylph as she shot towards the goal posts with great speed. She was impressed. Sylph really wouldn't need much tutoring after all. She just needed to practice kicking off a few times and maybe vertical flying and this girl would be great. She grinned, pleased with Sylph's abilities.
" That was great!" she said to Sylph." You know, for someone who has never been on a broom before, you really look like you know what you're doing. The main thing about flying is confidence, and you sure have that! Ok, now verical flying and flying at different heights. Rule Number One! Never lean unless you want to change speeds! Leaning forward makes you go faster and back makes you go slower. It has nothing to do with height. If you want to change height, use the hands holding onto the broom to point in which direction you want it to go. Here do this."
Aidana took her broom and pointed it slightly upwards. She leaned forward slowly and the broom siled in the direction she wanted to go. It looked easy, and it was.
" Come on! You try!"

Sylph shrugged a little at Aidana's first comment.
"This isn't strictly my first time on a broom," she explained. "I've done it once before with my uncle, but it wasn't a very long lesson - we almost got caught by some muggles walking their dog... mam never let me go again."
Next she watched carefully as Aidana demonstrated changing height. This was the bit she hadn't done before. Slowly she directed the tip of her broom handle upwards, leaning forward very slightly, and, to her delight, it worked! Next she directed it down, leaning forward and back until she got a nice steady speed going. She pulled up again, and leant into the broom a little, quickening her pace as she streaked past one of the goal posts again. Straightening now, she pulled to a halt and looked back at Aidana.
"I think I've got it," she said happily. "Can we try something a little more advanced?"
