Anna listened closely to what the professor was saying about making a babbling beverage. She pulled her text book out as instructed, and read down the list on which ingredients she would need. Once she finished skimming the ingredients and directions, Anna preheated her cauldron so it would be ready for when she added the daffodil root and dragon milk.
Anna chopped the daffodil root up neatly and measured out 40 fl. ounces of dragon milk. She took the daffodil root and placed them carefully into the dragon milk and stirred them until the milk turned a deep dark green, as instructed. Anna poured the disgusting looking green milk into the cauldron and took out her parchment, quill, and ink. Anna wrote down the questions on the board with a few spaces in between each one for an answer. That took up three minutes which she was waiting for the milk to simmer. Add the half-horn of the horned toad. This should have no effect on the potion, but the horn should melt into a black goo at the bottom of the cauldron. This is supposed to happen - make no attempt to stir. Anna read carefully. She took a full horn of a horned toad and cut it in almost perfect half. She added it to the green milk and watched as it turned into a thick black goo at the bottom, just as it said it would. Anna read ahead and prepared her four brightly colored butterfly wings, and the loveage leaves. She slid on her dragon hide gloves that she just retrieved from her school bag. One by one, Anna put in her butterfly wings, orange, turquoise, yellow, and green. The potion was fizzing and Anna quickly took a pinch of loveage leaves and added them to the potion. At first, nothing happened, but then the potion started to slow down and bubble lightly.
Anna took her stirring rod and stirred the potion carefully and check the clock. She counted five minutes later and looked around the room while waiting five minutes. She watched as people added their ingreients and stirred and they all seemed to be in about the same stage as her. Some were finished, some were answering the questions on the board, and others were still in the potion-making process.
When five minutes had passed, Anna measured out 10 ounces of catsbane and poured it into the mixture. She picked up her stirring rod again, being careful to only go counter-clockwise, she stirred it seven strokes, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Anna couted and during the counting of the strokes, she saw silver streaks in the potion. Anna checked the directions and turned the cauldron on full heat and sat back down, timing twelve or thirteen minutes.
Anna picked up her quill and dabbed it into the ink. Anna Tomlin Gryffindor Potions- Lesson One
1) How long have you been at Magic Horizons? I have been at Magic Horizons since June 27th 2005.
2) What are your favorite subjects, and why? My favorite subjects are Defense Against the Dark Arts and Astrology. I love Defense Against the Dark Arts because it is extremely helpful in the world. I also like Astronomy because I have always loved the stars and learning about constellations and other things to do with the stars.
3) Why are you taking Potions as a subject? When I was younger I always wanted to know if you could really make a love potion, or any types of potions to help or hurt you. I figured that this could also be helpful if I know how to make potions for anything.
4) Tell me something unique about yourself, in as many words as you like.
Anna couldn't think of anything unique about herself, and luckily, it had been thirteen minutes, which meant that she had to finish her potion. She turned back to the book and looked at the next instruction. She decided to add the flavor of chocolate. She stirred in the chocolate flavor carefully. Anna took the 17 Bowtruckle quills and stirred counter-clockwise for two minutes more. Anna turned off the heat and took out a bottle to put the potion in. But, before she put the potion in the bottle, she had to finish the last question. Finally, she thought of something quickly and wrote it down. When she picked up her parchment, this is what it looked like:

Anna bottled up her potion and handed in her questions. She walked back and sighed. Now for the cleanup Anna thought as she looked at her desk. Dragon milk and catsbane were spilled a little on her desk. There were extra Bowtruckle quills sitting in the milk that couldn't be used now unless she wiped them off carefully. Anna started the massive cleanup without a fuss though.
(ooc: Me too. sorry about the length. although it is the longest post i've ever made...)
Professor Aecus says: "A very promising first lesson! Your potion looks perfect, and your essay was very informative. I am glad you find my subject interesting - there are very few who actually do. Great stuff! Twenty points."

As usual Heaven went along unseen. Ebony tresses paired with such dark eyes kept her well hidden as she sat in a shadowed area of the classroom. She would stand going up with the others to get the supplies and return to her cauldron.
She worked quickly, silently. She had a knack for potions, then again she had cooked for her family since she was tall enough to reach the stove. Things had been bad there, but thankfully each of her tasks had helped her with her magic somehow.
As she finished she filled a flask with the potion, and grabbed a piece of parchment. Many were still working as she began to write.
Heaven Casteel Ravenclaw
1) How long have you been at Magic Horizons? I haven't been here very long, I transferred from a school in America. 2) What are your favourite subjects, and why? I like potions, for I seem quite decent at it, and I do like Care for Magical Creature, most of them we don't see back at home. 3) Why are you taking Potions as a subject? As I stated earlier I am alright at potions so I though that it would be a good class for me. 4) Tell me something unique about yourself, in as many words as you like. I don't really know what there is to say about myself. I'm not good at sports, or great at getting good grades. I am not beautiful, nor am I unbearable to look at. I guess there really isn't anything unique about me at all.
Professor Aecus says: "Oh, Heaven. Once again I am sensing a lack of self-belief in one my students, and it just won't do. All magic, not just potions, is fuelled by self-belief. Have faith in yourself, and the rest will follow. If you feel like you want a bit of extra coaching after lessons, I'm sure we could arrange something, although I'm sure you don't need it - your potion was very well made. Seventeen points to Ravenclaw."

Bryan looked around at everyone else, and then looked at his own text book. This could be fun. A babbling beverage. So many tricks to play. Better finish it first. He placed the ingredients in the potion, and decided to finish the questions after a light read. He pulled out a small book and placed it on top of his textbook. It was labelled in japanese, "Rabuhina". He tried to keep from laughing as he read about one of the characters falling into the outdoor bath, already occupied by one of his tenants. Again, he tried to supress laughter as this caused the poor landlord to be sent into orbit via her fist.

Anna glanced around the room, just to find any familiar faces, and she saw a few. Forgoil Halifirien. Aylen Hawkins. Finally her blue-grey eyes stopped on one girl whom Anna met on late night in the Library. Anna's very first friend here at Magic Horizons. She smiled as she started towards this sweet girl that accepted Anna as her friend. She was careful to come up behind this girl. Slowly, she wrapped her hands over the girl's eyes and whispered into her ear, "Guess who Rezna?"
Yes. That certain girl who had accepted Anna, was none other than Rezna Lardale. She would keep her hands over Rezna's eyes until she got some sort of reaction or response. Anna smiled mischeviously as she waited.

Yamaroshi hadn't believed the rumours about the new potions master, nor did he expect anybody else to have. He knew the potions master would just be an ordinary witch or wizard. Or at least, he thought.
He was caught off guard as he saw Ace enter the classroom. He couldn't imagine why a vampire would want to enter a classroom full of kids learning to make potions. But when Yamaroshi caught sight of the text book under Ace's arm, it dawned on him that Ace might be the new potions master. Sure enough, Ace began talking to the class. Yamaroshi grinned. Having a vampire for a teacher was certainly more interesting than a four headed hag.
Yamaroshi had seen Ace once before, about a year ago in the Chamber of Secrets. Seeing Ace now made him remember is first visit to the chamber quite vividly. He wondered if Ace remembered him, not that he could think of any reason he wouldn't.
Yamaroshi got started on the assignment right away. He began by reading the instructions in the text book completely, so he wouldn't miss anything later on. He took the book with him to the cabinet so he wouldn't forget any of the ingredients. He wasn't intending to use the potion later on, and didn't care how it tasted or how strong it was, as long as it worked. He grabbed the first four butterfly wings he saw, along with the other ingredients.
He sat down at his desk and set everything else aside. He turned on his cauldron so it would preheat while he wrote the paragraph.
Reaching into his bag, he pulled a piece of parchment and, not a quill and ink bottle, but a pen. It was always much quicker when he didn't have to dip a quill every few seconds. He began to write.
Yamaroshi Riel Slytherin
My name is Yamaroshi Riel. I have been at Magic Horizons since June twenty-eighth, two thousand - four. My favourite class would have to be the least favourite of most other students--history of magic. I've always been fascinated about what kind of things went on in the past. I took potions because it's an important class to have for almost all jobs, and because it's good to have lots potions ready to use for whatever reason.
Yamaroshi stopped there. He didn't have any trouble figuring out the most unique thing about him. He was a parselmouth. It was certainly an ability that few other people had, and would certainly fit the question nicely, but Yamaroshi was under the impression that Ace was trying to find out more about his students, and he already knew Yamaroshi was a parselmouth. In fact, he was the one who told Yamaroshi he was a parselmouth. Still, Yamaroshi wanted to finish the assignment and move onto his potion. He continued:
The most unique thing about me that I can think of is being parselmouth.
Yamaroshi looked at his paper. A bit of a lame finish, but good enough.
Professor Aecus says: "Ah, Yamaroshi, I am excited to have another acquaintance of mine in my lessons. Your potion was fine and your essay good, although I don't know why you would tell me something about yourself that you know I already know... I'm sure there is more unique things about you than just an ability you were born with. Anyhow, I look forward to seeing you in my lessons in future. Eighteen points."

Her hand danced across her sheet of parchment as she finally decided what to write for her essay. Her headache had subsided enough for her to be able to focus on her writing. The timing was perfect enough for her potion had cooled enough to be turned in. Glancing down on her piece of paper, she quickly reread what she had previously written.
Rezna Lardale Hufflepuff
1) I've been attending Magic Horizons for three months now. I don't remember the exact day, however, it was at the beginning of summer that I first stepped through the entrance hall doors.
2) I don't exactly have a favorite subject for I have not attended that many classes to make an opinion. However, if I had to choose from those available, I'd take History of Magic. The past fascinates me as does the magical world so both interests seem to be satisfied in that class.
3) I'm taking Potions because it is the one thing that I was not allowed to practice at home. Now that I'm here, I hope to learn as much as I can about it.
4) I do not find myself to be unique in any way. I simply make friends easily and am generally understanding.
Rezna decided that her essay was good enough and putting down her quill she was about to turn her assignment in when she felt a pair of hands close over her eyes.
"Guess who Rezna?" a soft voice whispered into her ear.
A happy smile spread across the blond girl's features before she could answer. The voice belonged to only one person, and she was overjoyed to hear it. Rezna had not seen her friend for days now and it was a wonderful surprise indeed.
"Well, you wouldn't be the one who attacked me with water balloons one sunny evening by the lake now would you, Anna?" she asked giggling a little at the memory.
Professor Aecus says: "Ah, another hard-working Hufflepuff! My favourite kind of student. Your potion was perfect and your essay good, although I find it hard to believe that you cannot find anything interesting to say about yourself. Still, twenty points to Hufflepuff. Call me biased."

Ace watched his class with muted pride as they studiously went about their work.
This is easy... he thought to himself, wondering what he had ever been nervous about. He tried to ignore the fact that he caught the scent of a Lycan in the classroom, and rifled through some paperwork he had to fill in to give to Claire, confirming his position as the new teacher.
Suddenly, he heard some laughter. Frowning, he looked up. If they had been making a laughing potion he would have ignored it, assuming some idiot had taken a taste of their own potion, but the Babbling Beverage wasn't really that funny...
Creeping up behind Bryan, he saw the boy suppressing laughter at a Love Hina magazine. With a grin, Ace spoke.
"Unless you have enough for everyone in this class, I'm afraid I'm going to have to confiscate this until the end of the lesson," said Ace, trying to sound stern although the amusement in his eyes was obvious. He held out his hand and took the magazine from Bryan. "Finish your questions and you can be out of here," he instructed, and returned to his desk... where he opened up the magazine he had just confiscated and started reading.

Ashlle hadn't seen Professor Aecus confiscate the Manga magazine. She was much too busy writing up her Essay. Ashlle G. Rainier Gryffindor
1) How long have you been at Magic Horizons?
This is my Second Year here, so I've been here one full year and counting.
2) What are your favorite subjects, and why?
I really don't have a favorite subject yet. I'll most likely develop a favorite once I start taking more subjects around Third Year.
3) Why are you taking Potions as a subject?
It is required, but I'm also finding I enjoy cooking.
4) Tell me something unique about yourself, in as many words as you like.
I have discovered I am a Parselmouth, with Aminta's help (she is a wolf). But then I suppose there are a few people who can do that. I Live in a large castle called Rainier Castle and I have four House Elves who take care of it for me. I bought them because the castle had fallen into disrepair since my Parents died.
Ashlle nodded. Most people have only one House Elf, she thought I have four and that is unique. Rolling up the parchment she tied it with a piece of red ribbon. Then she bottled a portion of her now cool potion and handed both in to her professor. Then she went back to her seat to wait for her grade. While she was waiting she bottled up more of the potion to take with her as he had said they might. Professor Aecus says: "Wow. This is without a doubt the most interesting essay I have read so far. Since when were house-elves an extension of a person's personality? And... please, don't even refer to my subject as "cooking". Please. Despite that, your potion was perfect. Sixteen points to Gryffindor."

Anna giggled at Rezna's response, "Of course not," she started, stiffiling her laughter, "Why would I do that to such a sweet girl?" Anna finished jokingly. (ooc: if that's a word..) She uncovered Rezna's eyes and walked to the front of her desk, "It's been too long darling," she smiled and gave her a quick, but friendly hug.
She locked her blue-grey eyes with Renza's eyes. "Why don't we go to Hogsmeade together after class and maybe go to the Three Broomsticks and get a drink... maybe shop around?" she asked, getting a bit excited. "We need to catch up. Unless you have other things to do..." Anna assured her with a quick warm smile. "Whaddya say?"

"No, you're right my dear Anna; you would never do something like that to me. I must be thinking of your evil twin," Rezna replied laughing a little at their personal joke. "And I'd never pass the chance to spend a day in Hogsmeade with you. I hardly ever see you as it is."
The Blondie Hufflepuff returned the other's hug just as warmly. "Just give me a second," she said as she reached into her book bag for something. In seconds she pulled out a small vial into which she poured a small sample of her potion. Putting a stopper on her bottle, she turned to check that the ink on her essay had dried. Seeing that it did, the girl rolled up her parchment and secured it to her potion sample.
Standing up, she turned to Anna and nodded her head to the teacher's desk before hurrying over there. Placing her assignment next to all the others already littering the professor's desk, she glanced to see at what the others' potions looked like. She noted happily that hers did not differ from all the others.
Returning to her desk, she smiled at Anna once more. "I hope you've finished, for then I think we are free to leave." Without waiting for her reply, Rezna scooped up all her loose parchment and quills into her mud-splattered bag. Checking her desk for anything she might have forgotten, the 'Puff turned her attention to her friend. "Well, I'm free as soon as I head out that door," she said with a grin on her face. Her headache had disappeared entirely, which was a relief. "What do you say for some shopping?"

Ace cleared his throat, his piercing green gaze looking directly at Anna and Rezna. Without a doubt, one of his biggest fears about teaching was giggling girls, and his potential inability to control them. But at the moment, his fear seemed far away, his irritation coming through most strongly.
"I don't mean to be a party pooper, girls, but could you please keep it down until you are actually on the other side of the classroom door? Some of this class are still working."
He smiled pleasantly, but his fangs gleamed yellow in the flickering light of the twenty odd cauldrons alight around the class, diminishing the pleasantry of his smile.

Just give me a second. Anna heard Rezna reply. She that time to grab her messenger bag and put all of her extra ingredients and other things she used to make her potion. As soon as everything was cleaned up, Anna went back over to Renza. Well, I'm free as soon as I head out that door Anna heard, "Yeah, I i'm free as soon as I head out that door as well... so, let's go off and get some shopping done!" Anna exclaimed as she smiled at her friend.
I don't mean to be a party pooper,[/b] Anna heard come from a somewhat annoyed voice. She turned just to see their professor as he continued, but could you please keep it down until you are actually on the other side of the classroom door? Some of this class are still working.[/b] He smiled and Anna saw fangs in his mouth and gasped silently.
"I'm terribly sorry professor," Anna started her voice quavering, she hated when she got in trouble from a teacher, "I'll try to make sure it won't happen again." she assured him with a slight smile. She pushed back some of her dark greyish black hair out of her blue-grey eyes and turned to Rezna, "Okay, let's go." she suggested with one eyebrow up and the other down, in deep thought.

Post by Teagan on Sept 10, 2005 5:57:32 GMT
OOC: 0.o Long-ness post.... IC: A few minutes before class had begun, Teagan silently sat down and pulled out her potions book and supplies. Potions was a class she often found to be her favorite. Then, she quietly slipped her right hand's fingers into her pocket and pulled out a simple black hair-tie. After all, she couldn't be having her hair get in the way, now could she? Teagan moved her delicate fingers through her elegant hair as she patiently wrapped the longer strands near the base of her neck with the dark band. Soon, most of the red fibers were firmly held back into place. A few of the lesser threads drifted to her shoulders, and the bangs that flowed over part of her face remained free. Fortunately, they probably wouldn't interfere as much as their counterparts.
Teagan held herself in good posture, and kept her hands steadily on her lap as she waited one minute more for the class to finally begin. In the meantime, she absentmindedly noticed several students she knew in the classroom. Oh well. She wouldn't be getting distracted in this class.
Their teacher walked in as soon as time marked the class's schedule to begin. He was tall and not too shabby looking, even though he seemed not to care about his clothing, but Teagan immediately noticed a peculiarity about his form. He was indeed a vampire, but she had learned about them at her old school and had met several there while studying. She wasn't bothered by the fact that their professor was such a creature. He had bright green irises, and his lethal fangs were minutely revealed as he calmly grinned. The vampire said that he was Professor Aecus, and quickly gave them instructions on what to do for their class period.
Without wasting time, Teagan lifted her buttocks from her chair and devotedly chose her ingredients with careful precision. She could deal with answering the pointless questions later. She deftly took her ingredients to her working area, and began the potion. Making potions was quite an entertaining and enjoyable hobby, anyway. Before beginning, Teagan hastily noted not to accept food or drink from other students at Magic Horizons.
She competently squeezed out the nutritious juices of her pre-cut daffodil root into the simple container that held some rather expensive dragon milk before gently dropping the chopped root into the milk. She contiguously started to stir the beginning potion, and it soon turned a lush, pine-like green. The process appeared faster than many other students because she had extracted many of the juices first, but it was still quite efficient work so far. Next, she patiently tilted the container of milk, and it placed itself in the warm cauldron from the eased fall. Then, her job was to wait for three minutes while the potion simmered and heated. She looked around the room patiently, and began to work on the potion immediately after the one hundred eighty seconds passed. In the duration of that period, she hastily slid on her dragon-hide gloves as to not get burnt.
Teagan then added the half-horn of the horned toad next, and calmly watched as the ingredient melted then gunk-ed itself back together toward the bottom of the cauldron as the dissipating layers fell upon each other's glopping shapes.
She compiled each of the butterfly wings slowly, and the small scales bended and reformatted while on her fingers for the few tender seconds that it took to lift the wings. Considering the fact that the most exotic wings would have more interesting affects, Teagan quickly added one, and waited for the change in her chemicals before adding the next one. She first set a red wing in the potion, then a green one, a blue one, and an orange one. The potion became a deep, royal shade of violet after the first butterfly wing, and started to gently sizzle as the second wing entered. After the third, the purple potion was most definitely fizzing. So far, everything had been going according to plan. That was good, but now was a crucial step.
Teagan added the lovage leaves, and the potion quieted itself and appeared as if it was no longer prepared to explode at any randomly chosen second. Next, she patiently timed herself as she quietly stirred for five more minutes. Luckily, Teagan was a fast worker and had now managed to surpass some of the people that had gotten their ingredients before her.
Soon, she introduced catsbane to the purplish liquid, and carefully counted her every stir. Following directions was something she was also well-accomplished in. She stirred precisely seven times around in her cauldron in a counter-clockwise motion. During the stirring, gray streaks were mixing in with the violet and they had now become an enchanting silver, as it was said to in their textbooks. Then, Teagan heated her cauldron fully, and chose to wait twelve minutes and thirty seconds, the exact center of the proposed timing.
Now, the girl deftly answered most of the written questions on the chalkboard. She calmly slipped her quill's tip into some violet ink and began to write in her long, eloquent handwriting.
Soon enough, the twelve minutes and thirty seconds came by and Teagan quickly added some slight flavoring to her concoction. Her choice of flavor was the apple peels that she had gathered before she started brewing her Babbling Beverage. She draftily stirred the skins into her potion with ease.
Next, were her Bowtruckle quills, the final ingredient. She calmly added them, and continually stirred the mixture in the same counter-clockwise motion without changing the timing of her stirring in any way possible. The same rhythmic beat flooded through the interestingly colored potion. Eventually, the two minutes ended, and Teagan deftly stopped heating her potion. She finished writing her answers on the parchment, and bottled the liquid after a precise five minute wait. Even though that part hadn't been required, it was recommended, and that was good enough for her. Teagan quickly cleaned up her already neat working area of the slight sliver of scraps in various places, and returned to her seat. Her potion had been precise, and would definitely be considered one of the better ones she had made.
After a few seconds, the corners of Teagan's lush lips settled into a curl; her thoughts consisted of when she made her first potion many years ago and failed absolutely miserably. Oddly enough, she chosen to stay after school for a while in order to study potions more and to better her skills. The extra effort had most certainly paid off.Potions: Lesson One Teagan Monolayre Ravenclaw
1) I have been at Magic Horizons since March of this year.
2) My favorite subjects consist of charms, divination, and potions. I enjoy charms because of the interesting and helpful things you can learn to do and use in necessary instances. Divination is another subject I like because you can learn more about yourself by studying divination and seeing how you interpret things. Potions is a fun subject that you can do many fun things with that are unique to that subject, so it is also one of my favorites.
3) I'm taking potions as a subject because it is required and I enjoy it.
4) There's not many unique things about myself, but I have recently been named a Ravenclaw Prefect.Professor Aecus says: "Well done, Teagan. Your potion was set to excellent standard and your essay well thought-through, and of course I am thrilled to see you take such an interest in my subject. Take twenty points for Ravenclaw."

Having finished the essay, Yamaroshi was ready to move onto his potion. He reread the instructions one more time and put on his dragon gloves before he began.
He took the daffodil root and placed it in front of him. With his knife, he cut it half. He arranged the two halves so they were parallel and cut them again, divided them into quarters. He continued until the root was cut into pieces that were one centimetre wide. With one hand, he swept the pieces off the table and into his other hand. He then placed the pieces in the dragon milk. He stirred the mixture lazily and stared at it idly. When it turned green, he poured it into his cauldron.
Yamaroshi turned his attention to his digital watch. He watched the seconds go by until three minutes were up.
He added the horn next. Since it wasn't supposed to have any effect on the potion, he decided to add the butterfly wings. He waited for the colour change before adding the next one. After the third, he grabbed the lovage leaves so he could put them in right away. He dropped the third wing in. Once it started to get violent, he dropped the leaves in and watched it calm down. He grinned in satisfaction.
Now was time to continue stirring. Once again, Yamaroshi turned his attention to his watch. He waited for the seconds to reach thirty, then began stirring. He once again watched the seconds go one by one, until five minutes were up.
Next, he added the catsbane, and once again, began to stir. As he watched the silver streaks appear, he wondered why stirring counterclockwise was any different from stirring clockwise. Four, five, six, seven...
Yamaroshi picked up the bowtucke quills and dropped them into the potion. He stirred for two more minutes, as the book instructed. Finally, he turned his cauldron off and sat back as he waited for the potion to cool.

Bryan, disappointed at having his Love Hina confiscated, proceeded to write the answers to some of the questions.
1. I have been at Magic Horizons since August, 2005.
2. My favorite subject is whatever class I happen to be in when asked that question, so right now it'd have to be Potions. Why? Because I suck up to the teachers.
3. I'm taking potions, because I tend to have an amazing sense of timing with cooking, and mixing potions shouldn't be that far off.
