Ace stood outside the dungeon door, his hand poised on the wrought iron handle. He had been stood there for several minutes, listening to the bubbling chat of the students inside the room, awaiting their new Potions Professor. With a sudden rush of fierce confidence, the Vampire pushed open the door and strode into the classroom. He knew he must look an odd sight - he had simply thrown some war-torn black robes over his usual jeans and white shirt, not the usual dress for Professors of this school - in fact the only thing to distinguish him as a teacher was the battered copy of Potion Making underneath his left arm. As he reached the desk, he turned his gaze to the class, the dim candlelight of the Potions room causing his green eyes to twinkle almost mischieviously. "Welcome to Potions," Ace said with a grin, revealing the very tips of his pointed fangs. "I am Professor Aecus, your new Potions Master. I know that there were rumours flying around that a four-headed hag was going to be teaching this class this year... I hope I'm not too much of a letdown after that." He grinned again, but mostly because he knew it was he and Kiki that had started those rumours, just as a joke. How were they supposed to know it would spread like wildfire? "Right. Well, seeing as I don't know any of you that well, I'd feel bad about setting you something really difficult for our first lesson together - so I thought we'd do something fun. Today we will be making a Babbling Beverage, and, as an extra treat - I'll be letting you take the potions out of the room with you, to use at your leisure." He winked. "So, open your books to the chapter on Babbling Beverages, and follow the instructions as precisely as you can. I won't ask for a follow-up report today - but I do want some essays on you lot, seeing as we'll be seeing quite a lot of each other from now on. The questions are on the board - make sure you remember to put your name and house on your parchment." Ace sat in the chair behind the desk and surveyed his class with mild amusement. "Enjoy." 1) How long have you been at Magic Horizons? 2) What are your favourite subjects, and why? 3) Why are you taking Potions as a subject? 4) Tell me something unique about yourself, in as many words as you like.www.freewebs.com/acerbusaecus/

Ondrea sat in the classroom, not excited at all, actually she wondered why she hadn't skipped out today, all she knew is she was sitting in the back corner of the classroom, with her empty cauldron (that was pre-heating) on her desk, waiting for the new teacher.
To her surprise, a vampire, who she had met before, by the name of Ace, came in, and started his introduction to the class. Thankful that the ingredients for the potion they would be making were being provided, she walked over to the cabinet, with her text, and picked out everything she needed, trying to pick out the most exotic and colorful butterfly wings possible. Returning to her desk, she started to chop her daffodil root as careful as possible.
Quickly glancing up at the board to see their essay, she was relieved, for it wasn't going to be very long, and she would probably have it done by the end of class.
Once finishing with her daffodil root, she picked it up carefully, and placed it in the cauldron. Then looking at the dragon milk, she measured about forty ounces of the thick liquid, and poured it in.
Letting out a yawn, she looked into her textbook, to see what she should put in next.

Aylen jumped as the professor strode into the room and quickly hid his dungbombs under the table. Even if it really was a four-headed hag, he wasn't going to let her be exempt from his traditional new teacher welcome. He was disappointed, however, when a rather normal looking person had entered the doorway. His plans for the new professor rapidly changed as he caught sight of the professor's smiling green eyes so similar to his own mischevious ones; it was all but thrown out the window when he saw the pointed eyeteeth.
The redhead sighed noisily after the professor was finished with instructions, but began his potion. This professor didn't seem too bad, at least. He ruffled through the textbook to the correct page and began.
Aylen sawed the daffodil root roughly into five pieces and dropped into the milk. He nearly panicked as it began turning bright blue, but the Gryffindor relaxed as it settled into the deep green as he stirred. He glanced at the pages, reading the next direction. The redhead sighed in frustration, as he realized he had forgotten to preheat the cauldron. He paused for a moment, then shrugged and dumped the milk and root mixture into the cauldron anyway. It would just heat slower, that was all. He watched as it began to bubble and turned the hourglass. When time was up, he put the half-horn and the wings in one-by-one, being careful not to make any more mistakes. As soon as the last wing went in, he added the leaves, stirring quickly after the leaves were gone. He watched the sand slowly filter to the bottom of the hourglass and dropped in the catsbane. The redhead lost count of the number of stirs he had made, but gave it one last good stir and added apple skin to the silver-streaked mixture. The bowtruckle quills went in last as the book instructed, and he stirred counter clockwise for two more minutes. Aylen doused the fire and waited for his potion to cool.
He wiped his brow, and grinned in satisfaction. His clumsiness hadn’t made him do anything catastrophic yet. Maybe today would be a good day after all. If his potion turned out right, maybe he could slip some into his sister’s drink. His grin turned slightly more mischeivious at this thought. While the potion cooled, Aylen began his essay.
Aylen Hawkins Gryffindor My name is Aylen Hawkins and I have been at this school for a bit more than a year. My favorite subject of all is Quidditch, though it isn’t really a subject. Flying just makes me feel free and I’m better at it than walking. My sister and I are rather reknowned for our clumsiness. I haven’t had the chance to go to any Quidditch games, much less play in them, and this irritates me more than anything. It drives me insane knowing my sister is chaser for the Gryffindor team. I am taking potions because it’s required. A lot of potions interest me, but I usually don’t have the patience for them.
Aylen put his quill and ink away. It wasn’t the best essay in the world, but it would do. He bottled the potion, cleared up and brought the parchment and the potion up to the teacher’s desk.
Professor Aecus says "Great work on the potion, Aylen, and it's great to know a bit more about you. I did notice, however, that you didn't mention a quality you have that makes you unique, and I'm pretty sure you must have one... but other than that, excellent work. 18 points to Gryffindor."

Starlit walked into the classroom and sat sullenly at the desk beside Ondrea. Who seemed not too thrilled to be at class. Her cauldron in front of her she sat and waited for the teacher to arrive.
Only around two minutes later when the professor walked in she listened for the instructions. Opening her book to the page she looked over the ingredients and walked to the cabinet. Once getting the things she would need she sat back at her desk and set them carefully down. Starlit put her paper and quill into her black bag on the floor for the time being, she would leave the essay for last.
Turning on her cauldron so it would pre-heat she turned back to her book. Measuring the dragon milk into a container she began to carefully cut her dandelion root. This done she put it into the container with the dragons milk.
Stirring it steadily she waited and finally it turned into what she considered to be deep green. Satisfied she poured it into the cauldron which had by now heated up. Looking at her watch she set it for three minutes. While she was waiting she slipped on her dragon hide gloves, as she would need them soon.
Her watch gave a single beep and she peered at her potion and was relieved to see it was still green. Picking up the half a horned toads horn she slipped that in, watching as it melted to the bottom of her cauldron.
Picking up the first delicate bright red and orange butterflies wing she had selected she put it into the potion. The potion turned purple, but not as deep purple as she may have hoped. With a light shrug she added the next two wings and her potion began to fizz and sputter a few random droplets on the surface. Hastily adding the final pink and yellow wing she quickly added a pinch of lovage leaves. 'I hope I didn't add to many...' she thought as she watched the leaves sink into the mixture and slowly evaporated.
Now that it was bubbling normally she relaxed slightly and began to stir it. Timing it for five minutes, when this time was up she measured the ten ounces of catsbane and put it in as well. Dipping in her spoon she counted seven full counter-clockwise rotations before turning it up to full heat. Silvery streaks appeared contrasting with the purple tone. Now turning up the heat leaving it to boil she sat in silence and waited.
She waited the remaining few minutes and then added the bowtruckle quills. Stirring the potion yet again she finally was near finished. Turning off the heat she left it to cool.

Rezna turned her attention to the classroom door as their professor entered. Listening to his little introduction, all her hesitation on account of whether she was going to like the class or not disappeared. The teacher was pleasant, even tried to joke with them, and his outlook on the subject was a good natured one.
With a sigh, Rezna got out of her seat to pick out the ingredients she would need to create their Babbling Beverage potion. On her way back to her seat she tried to see if she knew anyone else in the class. In the far corner she saw Ondrea, deeply concentrating on their assignment. The bright red headed boy two rows over could only be one person, but Rezna did not have time to chat.
This being her first attempt at potions, she was going to give it all her best, and that meant to distractions. Taking her seat, the Hufflepuff spread out her ingredients and reread the instructions for their potion before beginning.
Placing her cauldron to heat, blond haired girl took the daffodil root and chopped it as neatly as she could. Adding that into her container of dragon milk, she continued to make the potion as carefully as she could. When adding the colorful butterfly wings, she got really worried when after her bright red, purple, and blue wings touched the potion no fizzing occurred. Adding the fourth hesitantly, she held her breath in hopes that she hadn't messed up. After a few seconds the liquid began to bubble, then fizz, although it wasn't as sudden as any of her other classmates'.
Hoping that her delayed reaction was not as bad of a sign as it looked, the girl proceeded. Eight minutes later and after Rezna had added the catsbane and stirred the potion seven times counter-clockwise, the silver streaks along the surface allowed her to release a tense breath. Turning up the heat, she let her thoughts drift off while waiting the required twelve minutes for it to boil. She wondered if she would use her potion, that was only if it was successful, and on who. Herself was a logical idea, but she could make a great fool of herself without the need of the potion. There were a few friends she'd have liked to take good-natured revenge on, but perhaps it was not with a potion.
Deciding to save if for the future, the girl reached over and threw in a few apple peals, for she had been too rushed to peal the whole apple. She was about to turn off her potion, when the unused Bowtruckle quills caught her eye. Gasping, she added those to the potion and without thought began to stir, only clockwise. It was after a minute of rereading the directions that she found out about her mistake. Hastily, she switched to stirring counter-clockwise for the remaining minute.
Turning off her potion, she let it cool, not sure that her cauldron's contents were exactly what the assignment asked for. Still, she wasn't about to redo the entire thing, and in her eyes the potion was more or less what was required. Cleaning up her table, she sat down with paper and quill, thinking of what to write. As she did, her hand mechanically flew up to her temples and began to massage them in a rhythmic pattern. Her headache was starting to come up again, much to her distress and anger. Willing it to go away, the 'Puff tried to focus on her writing. She wasn't too successful.

When Ashlle saw Professor Aecus grin she almost screamed. She had not heard the rumors of a four-headed hag, nor had she expected anything other than a wizard or witch to ever teach any of her classes. She quickly calmed herself with the thought that the Heads must know what they were doing. They wouldn't put students in such obvious danger. Fighting Danawi had been one thing. But this . . . they Must have reason to trust Professor Aecus, a all powerful and wonderful reason.
Opening her new potions book, Ashlle stared. She'd never imagined that the Babbling Beverage was so intricate! Maybe she was just out of practice. It had been a while since she'd taken a potions class after all.
First she went to the store closet and gathered her ingredients, choosing apple skins as her flavoring & some gilttering Purple/blue Butterfly wings. Upon retuning to her work area she put on her dragon-hide gloves then carefully chopped the daffodil root, this seeming to be the only preparation necessary, seeing as the other things were already in measured amounts.
Suddenly remembering the full set of stir rods she'd purchased, she opened up the underused packet of them and raised her hand. When called on she asked; "P-Professor Aecus? Er-sir, what sort of stirring rod would be best for this potion? I've got Birch, Mahogany, Quartz, Turquoise, Glass, Ivory or China. The lady at the store told me that such a thing is very important to have a potion turn out well."
She hoped she hadn't offended him with that last remark.

Ondrea laughed under her breath, as a student she hadn't seen before jumped and hid what appeared to be dungbombs under the table, when the teacher entered the room, "Planning on setting those off where you? That would have been a funny sight." Ondrea whispered into the boys ear.
Sitting back, she waved when her friend entered the classroom, she hadn't expected to see Star there today, possibly because she didn't expect to be going to class either. Once Star sat beside her, she greeted her, "Hey Star." she said quietly.
Looking back at her potion, that was so far looking all right, she added the last of the ingredients, and stirred carefully, as she saw it changing all different colors, first from red, then to a dark blue, think to a dark black, which gave Ondrea a scare, and then to a green. Ondrea peered into Stars' cauldron, happy to see that they both had the same color of potion, so she must have done it correctly.
"Simple essay, eh Star?" Ondrea said, "Except for the last question, I will have to think on that one."
Taking her quill and parchment out of her bag, she read the questions out loud to herself, and then started to write down her answers.
[glow=purple,2,300]Ondrea Selmon Slytherin[/glow]
1) I have been at MH for nearly a year now. 2) I do not like school, so I do not really have a favorite subject. 3) I actually do not know why I came today, but I have decided it was worth while, and I will continue to attend potions. It will probably help me in the future, when I came across trouble, or such things. 4)
Ondrea had no clue what to write, so she decided to let the question ponder in her mind. Eventually giving up, she decided she would ask Star, "Star, what is unique about me?" she asked, "I have no clue what I should write for my answer."
Professor Aecus says: "Ondrea, what a pleasure it is to see you in my first class. Your potion was excellent, as is your essay - even if I did hear you ask somebody else what was unique about you. How about the fact that you socialise with interesting creatures in the middle of the night? Heh, only joking. Very well done. Full marks (20) to Slytherin."

As she waited for the hot concoction to cool she pulled out her slightly charred silver quill that she still had not yet bothered to replace and began to scrawl down an essay in her quick curling script.
Starlit Night Ravenclaw House
I have been a student at Magic Horizons for about five months now. My favorite subject so far had been astrology, probably because of my fascination with the space and the night sky. I am taking potions because it seemed like it could be interesting and it is a class I knew little about, also I needed one more subject to fill my time table. I like to read a lot and could probably spend a full day in the library without growing bored of it.
'Well it is good enough,' she though as she read it over. Her potion now cool she bottled it and put the vile along with her essay carefully on the teachers desk before heading back to her own. She had surprised herself when her potion hadn't turned some odd swampy color. Having assumed to be terrible at the subject, but seemed to have done alright, not outstandingly but good enough to cause a small smile to form on her face.
Starlit half turned to face her friend obviously thinking as she twirled a strand of her blonde hair around and around her finger. After a moment she replied in a whisper, "You love animals and are the most loyal person I know." Turning back to face the front of the class she had only one thing left to do... probably her least favorite part, clearing up. Starlit was despite what most thought not the most organized person being after all a forgetful daydreamer.
Professor Aecus says: "A well made potion and a thoughtful essay, thankyou very much! I like a student who isn't afraid to read, and like the fact that you called my subject interesting even more. No matter what anybody else says, flattery will get you everywhere. Twenty points to Ravenclaw House."

Ondrea waited for Starlits answer, and when she had said it, she smiled, a real smile for once, probably a shocker to Star, that was the nicest thing a person had said to her, not including her dead family members, "That is so nice of you!" Ondrea said, she wanted to jump up and hug her friend, but decided not to.
Looking back at her little essay, that was full of truth, maybe Ace would mark her lower, she shrugged, I'm not going to lie just to get a better mark, she thought to herself.
The printing that covered her piece of parchment, was messy, and Ondrea herself could barely read what she had written, so she decided she would re-write it.
Ondrea Selmon Slytherin
1) I have been at MH for nearly a year now. 2) I do not like school, so I do not really have a favorite subject. 3) I actually do not know why I came today, but I have decided it was worth while, and I will continue to attend potions. It will probably help me in the future, when I come across trouble, or such things. Also, it seems to be interesting to a certain extent. 4) I absolutely love animals, kind and unkind, and I love meeting creatures or people that are different. Usually I would prefer the company of an animal or creature over humans; they bother me.
Ondrea looked at her paper, "Thanks Star, I don't think I would have finished this without your input." Ondrea said, as she stood up, and walked towards the teachers desk. Waving at Rezna as she went. Upon reaching the desk, she placed her essay on his desk, "Hey." she said quietly to Ace, and then turned around, and headed back to her desk.
"Guess we have to clean up now." Ondrea said quietly, as she looking at Star, who looked as if she dreaded this part, Ondrea couldn't really blame her.
Pulling out her wand, from her hoodie, she cleaned up her mess, with a flick of her wand, and then decided she would help Star out, and cleaned her mess up to. Their left-over ingredients, sent floating towards the cabinet where they belonged.

Post by Faerlain on Sept 2, 2005 2:13:16 GMT
Faerlain had been patiently waiting inside the classroom, casting glances around at all the other students and recieving a few blank stares in return. It didn't appear like any teachers ever stayed very long at the school, for one reason or another. She didn't even become particularly attached to any of them, besides Talon. As a former student, she did feel like he was a bit more friendly and realistic.
Yawning, she fiddled with her wand and adjusted the cauldron that sat in front of her. After a good two years of potions, she felt confident enough in the class to basically slop the potion together and then sit back and watch. Normally she might be using this class time to sleep, but she was quite interested to see who the new Professor would be. She'd heard some very interesting rumors...
However, they were all dashed when she saw Ace entering the classroom. She'd only met him once before, but saw him as kind of a Hufflepuff legend. A smile crossed her face- perhaps this class would be easier than she expected.
Sighing, she went up to the front of the classroom and collected all the necessary ingredients. She was able to snag some vanilla before a herd of first year girls got to it, causing her to revel inwardly at her victory. Once she had all the ingredients, she began. The effect that the horn of the horn toad had on the potion was troubling, but the book said that was supposed to happen. Hence she didn't worry about it too much.
The potion changed color so often she lost track of what it was supposed to be as beads of sweat gathered on her forehead from the heat of the cauldron. Finally, she added the Bowtruckle quills and finished, quite pleased with her effort. Selecting a plain looking flask, she waited the directed five minutes before bottling it and then proceeding to clean up and wipe out her cauldon.
Faerlain Darian Hufflepuff
1. I have been at Magic Horizons for approximatly a year, perhaps more. I don't even remember the exact date of my arrival, simply that it was raining and sometime in the summer.
2. I enjoy Magical History, probably because I like learning about the past. Don't they teach us that we are suppose to learn of the mistakes commited in the past, so that we cannot repeat them in the future?
3. I'm taking potions mostly because I have to. I'd like to recieve a full magical education, which sadly includes potions. I think the reason I usually don't do very well is because I don't like following instructions. I would much rather be making up and discovering new things on my own.
4. Something about myself? I'm afraid there's not much to say. I'm very loyal to my House and my friends; as well as my boyfriend, Forgoil. My friends include Lottie, Carmen, Lars, Kasey, Wyl and any other 'Puffs, though I think I should get out and meet more people from other houses. Other than that, I'm afraid there's not much more to say. I do, however, look forward to having you as a professor and hope you will be able to make this class interesting for me.
Her hand was cramping up from all the writing, so she quickly placed down her quill and read back over her paper for error. Finding only minor ones, she rolled it up and attached it to her potion, which she left on Ace's desk. Once returning to her seat, she placed her head in her hands and proceeded to watch the rest of the class finish.
Professor Aecus says: "Despite the fact that Potions is obviously not your prefered choice of subject, you seem to be doing exceptionally well so far - though, what else could I expect of a Hufflepuff Prefect? I also hope I can make this class interesting for you. Twenty points to Hufflepuff, well done."

Forgoil had managed to wake up early today and made it down to the Dungeons in time to get a seat alongside Faerlain before the Potions teacher had arrived. The rumors that had been circulating around the school had all seemed rather far-fetched, but then again there was the slightest chance that they could be true. But all thoughts from a four-head hag to who knows what were dispelled when the teacher leisurely entered the Dungeon. This teacher seemed to have an air of confidence that Forgoil had seen before in Professor Windwaltz and Professor Chambers, but what excited the boy were the small fangs of the teacher. Clearly this was no ordinary human or perhaps he wasn't even human at all, but that only made the class more interesting.
The grey-haired boy stiffened in his chair as the teacher begin talking about the assignment, and he riveted his attention to the front of the class. Once the teacher said that they could begin, Forgoil started flipping through the pages of his Potions book. This Babbling Beverage didn't seem too hard to make, which was a relief to the boy since this was his first class in Potions, yet he knew that if he forgot to add one ingrediant at the right time; all could go wrong. Once he had carefully read over all of the instructions, Forgoil started to preheat his cauldron and went up to the front of the class to gather his materials. However once he got there, all of the optional ingrediants for making the Babbling Beverage agree with one's taste had been taken by the other students, or he just couldn't find them.
Carefully carrying all of his supplies back to his work place, Forgoil set them all out so that he could see them and he tried to lay them out in the order that they would be used. Once the cauldron had reached an acceptable temperature, the grey-haired Hufflepuff started with his first potion. Adding the chopped daffodil with the 40 liquid ounces of dragon milk wasn’t that hard at all. Stirring the contents of the container proved to be even less of a problem. Forgoil stopped stirring once it had reached a dark green color and slowly poured the green liquid into the cauldron. And then started the three minute wait.
Three….two…..one! The time was up and Forgoil pulled on his dragon-hide gloves for dealing with the heat of the cauldron. He then added in the half of a horn of the horned toad and watched quiziclly as it melted into a black goo. The instructions said this was bound to happen, but it did nothing to dispell Forgoil's lingering doubt. Adding in the butterfly wings one by one, th boy jumped back in fright as the potion began to hiss and bubble violating. But it said in the book that this was supposed to happen, and if the book said that was correct; why was he still nervous?
After completing the last few steps from adding the lovage leaves and stirring for 3 minutes to stirring in the catsbane seven times in a counter-clockwise direction and letting the potion boil for twelve minutes and thirty seconds (mediums always seemed to turn out better for Forgoil than extremes), he was at last ready to add in the Bowtruckle quills. Pricking himself with several of the quills as he added them in, Forgoil stifled a yawn as he began to stir counter-clockwise. The Hufflepuff began to grow drowsy and soon forgot about watching the time. He continued stirring the potion until his green-grey eyes widened with horror. He had been stirring the potion for thirty more seconds than required!
Quickly stopping his stirring and turning off the heat, Forgoil stiffly sat in his seat; worried that a mere thirty seconds would be enough to signifigantly change the potion. Sighing, Forgoil decided to finish off the small written assignment that the Professor had given them while waiting for the cauldron to cool off. Taking off his dragon-hide gloves and gently picking up his quill; Forgoil started writing on some of the parchment that he had brought along.
Forgoil Halifirien Hufflepuff
1. I think that I have been here for about four months now. I am not too certain, but I do recall that I frist came on June 7th of this year.
2. As of now, my favorite subject that I have taken would be History of Magic because it has become somewhat of a personal quest of mine to figure out more of my past, so perhaps learning about the past will help me discover my own. But the subject that interests me the most is Care of Magical Creatures, but so far there have been no classes to my knowledge.
3. Well, Potions is a required subject that must be taken by everyone and it does have many practical uses in today's world, but line of work that I want to go into doesn't really need one to be proficent at potions. But learning what I can about Potions now wouldn't hurt at all.
4. What is there to tell about myself? I am in Hufflepuff (which has already been stated) and am very protective of my friends and those that I love. My friends include Lottie McCartney, Lars Claybourne, Wyl Thirsk, Carmen Thompson, Rezna Lardale, Kasey King, Sakura McCartney, and several others from Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. The love of my life is Faerlain Darian; there are times where I honestly can't say what would happen to me if it weren't for her. I also am interested in nature, reading books, or the occasional fencing bout. Other than that, this is Forgoil Halifirien in a nutshell. I hope that I didn't bore you when I got a little sappy, but that is how I am. I look forward to having you as a professor but that means I need to read up some more on Potions, since it is my weakest subject.
Satisfied with his response, Forgoil had finished just a bit after the cauldron had cooled down. Donning his dragon-hide gloves once more; Forgoil filled up the sample flask with some of his Babbling Beverage and set it aside after tightly closing the lid. He then went about cleaning up his work space. After ten minutes of cleaning, Forgoil took his written assignment and everything that held the ingrediants back up to the supply table. Placing all of the containers and such back where he got them, the grey-haired boy walked over to the Professor's desk and placed his paper on the growing pile. Silently walking back to his seat, Forgoil was relaxed knowing that his potion wasn't an utter failure and was relieved to have survived his first Potions class.
ooc: Please forgive the length of this post. I got too caught up in it. ><
Professor Aecus says: "A very good effort! I did notice you were a little jumpy, perhaps nervous, when making the potion - I think maybe your weakness at Potions comes only from the fear that you might not be doing it right. With a little more confidence, I think you could go a long way. Your potion was, despite all nervousness, excellent, and your essay intriguing to read. Twenty points for Hufflepuff!"

Ace decided to wander around the class during their lesson, getting used to his new position as professor. His piercing gaze fell upon their smoking cauldrons with barely concealed delight; potion-making had been his secret pleasure for years now, and couldn't believe he was here to impart wisdom to the next generation. It was amazing.
As Ashlle raised her hand, Ace turned expectantly and listened to her question. Ace thought for a moment, and considered her wide selection of stirring rods.
"Well, I tend to prefer turquoise for most potions, but I also think the ivory would work well for such a volatile potion. Your choice." He smiled at her, and returned to viewing the class, who were doing exceptionally well. He saw a few of them look pretty doubtful about their own ability in making the potion, but nonetheless they were all creating more or less exactly what had been described in the textbook.
"You're all doing great," said Ace, wanting to reassure those in doubt. "It looks good. Once you've finished you can leave the class - I won't keep you any longer than necessary." He winked at Faerlain, the Hufflepuff Prefect who was slumped, already finished, at her desk.

"Oh. Thank you sir" That hadn't been so bad at all, Ashlle realized. Some how she'd expected to get chewed out for not knowing that. Perhaps literally.
Finally beginning on her potion, Ashlle placed the chopped-up daffodil root into the container of dragon milk. Stirring with the Ivory stir rod, she watched carefully as the milk turned deep green, then placed it in the cauldron which had been heating since she'd sat down to chop the root. The next instruction was 'Leave to simmer for three minutes' so Ashlle took this time to put her ingredients in the order in which she was going to use them.
Once three minutes was up she added the half-horn of the horned toad. The book told her that 'This should have no effect on the potion, but the horn should melt into a black goo at the bottom of the cauldron'. Melt into goo it did indeed. Still it was hard not to stir for Ashlle didn't like any sort of goo anywhere, it mad her sick, so much so that she couldn't chew gum and was forced to pick Apple instead of strawberry as her flavoring.
But flavoring comes later she reminded her self as she put in the first butterfly wing. Like the book said the change was swift, from deep green to deep purple. Ashlle added the second wing to no effect, but then she dropped the third wing in and the whole surface of the potion began to fizz rapidly. As she added the fourth wing, the Fizzing got worse and Ashlle lost no time in adding the lovage leaves.
True to the directions the potion began to slow down, the bubbles quickly dissolving the leaves. Ashlle sighed in relief as her potion was bubbling in a more normal fashion. She began stirring again carefully using the one stir a second method for five minutes.
Five minutes wasn't half as long as Ashlle thought it might be and soon it was time to add the catsbane. Once added, she sneaked a look at her watch-and-chain to remind herself which way counter-clockwise was and then proceed to stir seven times in that direction. She watched as the silver streaks appeared among the purple liquid of her potion. Smiling triumphantly she turned the cauldron's heats source up till the little arrow pointed to 'Full Heat'.
Checking her watch again she and let the potion boil while adding the Apple peals, slowly stirring afew more times. Once thirteen minutes had gone by she added the Bowtruckle quills, then stirred in the same one stir a second fashion as she had before in a counter-clockwise direction for a further two minutes. She sighed again as the time rain out on her watch. She'd done it! Turning off the heat, she smiled proudly and left it all to cool down.
While cleaning up in the sink she wondered why the others had gotten done so fast. It seemed like such a intricate potion, yet they all seemed to have no trouble with it. Maybe it was simply because she was a Second Year, and not up to their level yet. After cleaning off her Ivory rod and putting everything away she bottled up the potion got out a parchment, quill and ink and began to ponder the questions on the board.

Theltras ran through the hallway, heading towards the classroom as fast as his legs would carry him. He hoped he wouldn't be late, he was cutting it awfully close as it is. Somehow he managed to get there and sit down at an empty desk just before the teacher arrived. He breathed a sigh of relief. I'm not late...thank goodness... he thought to himself. He took the time to catch his breath as the teacher spoke.
When Professor Aecus was finished speaking Theltras got out his quill and began to work on the essay. He noticed that most of the class was working on the potion first. Why? he thought. It makes more sense to me doing the easy stuff first. Then again, I never really understood people that well... He wrote down his name and the house he was in at the top of the paper. The questions were answered quickly. It didn't take much thought to know what he was going to write.
1. I haven't been at Magic Horizons very long. I got transferred here recently from another school. 2. I don't have a favorite subject. I dislike them all equally. 3. There is no knowledge that isn't worth having. 4. I hate dogs. Most people like them, but I never did.
After he was done writing he put down his quill and went to get the ingredients for the potion. Everyone else had already gotten theirs, so he was forced to pick from the leftovers. He didn't mind though. There was bound to be a gem that they'd overlooked. He picked out the best from what was left and sat back down.
He chopped up the daffodil root quickly, not seeming to care much about how uniform the pieces ended up. He had chopped them a bit finer than some of the other students and when he was satisfied he threw it into the dragon milk. 'Dragon milk', how odd. Since when can dragons make milk? They aren't mammals. He began to stir it. When it finally turned green he put the mixture into his cauldron. He let it simmer a bit longer than the book said to before adding in the horn.
Theltras put on his dragon skin gloves and began putting in the butterfly wings. He had chosen black ones with splashes of color on the tips. Though the other students had left them, he was quite glad they did. Black butterflies were always good luck for him. He added them in the exact way the instructions called for. The potion changed color then began to fizz.
He quickly added in the lovage leaves. It was a big pinch, but he remembered something that amused him greatly. "Ever get pinched by an Italian?" He smiled slightly. That old nag was one hell of a cook. His mind wasn't completely on potion making at the moment but he was paying enough attention to not mess it up too badly at least. He flipped his hourglass over and stirred the potion.
When it was time he put the catsbane in. Being careful not to stir it clockwise he counted seven strokes and was delighted to see the silver streaks in the potion. He added in the flavoring - a used tea bag, apparently not a popular choice but one he liked. Much better than vanilla at any rate... He stirred it a couple more times then turned the heat up and let it boil.
The Bowtruckle quills were added last. After he was done making the potion he turned off the heat, let it cool, bottled it, and began cleaning up. He hoped it turned out decent. Though he really didn't care that much about following the instructions to the letter while making it...
Professor Aecus says: "Well now, I don't really feel that much effort went into this, which is a terrible shame, you know. I, as your professor, put a lot of effort into thinking of something fun to do for your first lesson, gave you an essay that would be easy to gain points on, and even am allowing you to take your potion with you. Although, by the looks of your potion, perhaps it wouldn't be the best idea... All I'm saying is that if I make this much effort, I expect my students to grant me the same courtesy, whether they achieve or fail doesn't matter as long as they try. Your only saving grace is that your unique point made me chuckle. Ten points, and no more. I expect a little effort in the future.

She'd over slept on her first day of lessons; potions, the one type of magic she could do. She'd been so wired the night before, waiting for morning so she could start class, and what did she do? Overslept. Sighing in resignation, she pulled on her school robes, tugged on her boots and ran out of the common room. Not bothering to apologize for shoving a few people, she flew down the allways, glaring at a group of first years who blocked her way. Jogging into the classroom, she came to a sudden halt, her violet eyes trained on the Professor. A low growl formed in her throat, instinctive and natural. It had come so quick, she couldn't stop it from slipping past her lips. A vampire. What was the Headmistress playing at, hiring a vampire to teach a bunch of human students? Who am I to talk.. she thought, averting her gaze and muttering "Sorry I'm late, Professor." Weaving her way around the many cauldrons she found an empty one at the back. Plopping down, she read the assignment on the board and began pulling out the necessary ingredients. Setting everything up at her table, she flipped open her textbook, while chopping up the daffodil root. Placing the daffodil in the dragon milk, she stirred it several times, watching as it turned a dark shade of green. Reading the next three steps, she poured the now-green ingredients into the pre-heated cauldron, and waited the necessary three minutes before dropping half-horn of the horned toad into the mix. Pulling on her dragon-hide gloves, she began to add the butterfly wings, one by one. Green, purple, fizzing. After the fourth one she quickly tossed in the lovage leaves, watching as the potion began to slow its rapid transformation. Sighing softly, she stirred the potion for the five minutes before adding the catsbane, then stirred again. Counter clockwise; one, two, three, four, five, six, and seven. Turning up the cauldron, she added a few vanilla pods and stirred it twice more. Then she pulled out her quill and a piece of parchment, dipping the tip of the quill into her ink bottle, a special pink color she'd bought just for class, she began to write... Raven-Elizabeth Hufflepuff House Potions- Lesson One
1) How long have you been at Magic Horizons? I've been at Magic Horizons for about a week now, though this is not my first time here. I spent about a month here a year or so ago.
2) What are your favourite subjects, and why? My favorite subjects are Potions and Herbology, because I love gardening and watching different plants grow, and because creating potions is the only magic I've ever been able to do/experience.
3) Why are you taking Potions as a subject? Basically because it's just about the only subject I can take, being a lycan and all. And also, because I hope to learn some new potions, maybe learn some helpful tips for potions I already know.
4) Tell me something unique about yourself, in as many words as you like. The only thing unique about me is the fact that I'm a born-lycan; now in days there are many lycans around, but only a rare few are born-ones. Adding the last ingredient to her potion, she stirred for afull two minutes, then re-read her paper as she let her Babbling Beverage cool. Bottling the potion, she attached her assignment to it, and took up to the Professor's desk. Leaving it beside the others, she walked back to her cauldron, sighing as she went about cleaning it out and putting away her materials. The one part she didn't like about potion making, cleaning up the mess, without magic. Professor Aecus says: "I can empathise with your situation, Raven-Elizabeth. Your potion was excellent, and your essay heartfelt. Twenty points to Hufflepuff."
