Aylen looked out the owlery window worriedly. 'Where is he?' he thought. He was half hoping he would be there and half hoping he wasn't. For one, he wasn't sure how the owls would react. He wasn't worried about Mercury, of course. It was just that he was sure no one had a merlin for a messenger before. The owls might attack him and they might get hurt. Aylen had no intention of seeing the headmistress before he was here for a week. Not for something bad, anyway.

Aylen turned, surprised. He hadn't realized there was someone else in the room. "Hey," he said to her.

Sylph bounded energetically up the long flight of stairs that led to the owlery. Finally she arrived in a large circular draughty room, filled with the smell of regurgitated prey and owl droppings. And of course hundreds of owls. Sylph looked up at them all, her green eyes scanning the mass of owls as if searching for something, turning her head every now and then as someone left or entered or threw pieces of crumpled paper to the floor, sending her long black hair flying around her in waves. Then she noticed Aylen and another girl standing close together. She smiled a winning smile and strode over to them. "Alright Aylen? How you doing?" she asked. "Is Mercury here then? And what's your name?" she added as she turned to face the girl, obviously another newbie. She flashed another dazzling smile and her green eyes flashed with humour. "I'm Sylph."

Another girl bounded into the owlery and promptly tripped and fell flat on her face. She picked herself up and kept walking as if nothing happened. Odd, she looked uncannily like Aylen. " Aylen, there you are! Is Mercury here yet? I think I forgot my spellbooks at home," she said as she looked out a window. All of a sudden she turned and noticed the two other girls standing there. " Hi!" she said, flashing a quick grin. "I'm Aidana, Aylen's twin. Can you tell?" she asked. They both had the same auburn hair and green eyes. She was a little bit shorter though and well...a girl. " I'm in Gryffindor too. How about you guys?"

Sylph turned to the new arrival, momentarily taken aback at how similar her and Aylen were. She recovered quickly however, and smiled. "Hi" she said "I'm Sylph. How come you and Aylen didn't arrive together? And yeah, I'm in gryffindor too."

" Hi Jennifer! Hi Sylph!" replied the girl smiling. "We would have arrived together if someone hadn't lost their trunk to the giant squid, " she said looking pointedly at Aylen, " I had to go back and get it because someone was loo lazy to get it himself." She smiled again, " I hope my brother didn't do anything stupid yet at this school."

"But of course," Aylen countered. "You didn't think of it til later and by then, someone else had gotten it for me while I dried off. Anyway..." He searched the owlery again. "Looks like Mercury isn't here yet." He put two fingers into his mouth and blew a piercing whistle that sent several owls flapping. There was an answering call as a bluish-grey raptor glided through the window. It made as if to land on Aylen's arm, but realized he didn't have his gloves and perched on the windowsill instead. "Gulu?" it asked. "I'm fine, thanks," Aylen said.

" Mercury!" exclaimed Aidana reaching up to the bird. "I hope you brought my school books. I think I left them in my room." She tried to untie the package tied to Mercury's leg, but he snapped at her. " Ow, Mercury! She doesn't like me," she said in explination to Sylph and Jennifer. " She only likes Aylen, who knows why, " she said and stuck her tounge out at him. " I can't see why we couldn't bring Mila. She was my Red-tailed hawk, and she was much more well behaved than Mercury." As Aidana said this, Mercury tried to snap at her again. " Yeah, yeah. Can I just have my books?" Mercury gave her a formible look. " Aylen! Do something!"

"Huh, c'mon Mercury, give her her books." Mercury held out his leg in a self-suffering way. Aylen sighed and untied the package. It was a rememberall. "It's not your books. It's your remembrall, but I don't think it'll help you any. I checked in my trunk, your books are in there. There are a little wet, though."

" I don't need a remembrall!" Aidana said indignantly. She took it and it glowed red. " I mean...um...yeah. So anyway, what were my books doing in your trunk? I was pretty sure I packed them in mine." The remembrall glowed even redder. " I don't need a remembrall!" she mentioned again feebly.
