Rica climbed the long staircase up to the owlery, parchment, quill, and ink in hand. Her footsteps echoed down the long circular track as she made her way up. As she reached the top, she quietly opened the door and slipped inside. The room was comforting, full of the smell of feathers and the soft coo's of the birds. She made her way over to one of the windows and sat on the window seat. Using light from the moon, she scribbled a note.
Uncle Ben,
Well, I made it, I'm here. It's actually a very nice place. I'm in Hufflepuff and have a position in the Hospital Wing. I get to help people.
I miss you and the shop, and I wish I could be there to help you. One of these days, I'll come and visit.
I am actually a little lonely here. Things sure have changed in the last month, huh. I know that I will make friends and settle down here, but I can't help feeling a little different.
Ah well, I am really enjoying here, and I hope I can come visit you soon. I really should get back to studying, but I will write you again very soon.
I love you,
Rica
She rolled up the letter with a ribbon, and capped the ink bottle. She walked softly to the back of the aviery until she came to a small corner in the end. Apollo greeted her with a soft hoot and an affectionate bump against her hand. Rica carried him back to the window and tied the scroll to his foot and stroked his feathers a few time before releasing him out the window. She sat and watched, sighing as the small bird glided off through the moonlight and out of sight.
