Jade entered the Owlery just as lightning began to flash behind her, silohuetting her visage onto the straw and bird dropping strewn floor. The inhabitants of the owlery fluttered in alarm as she suddenly appeared, looking haggard and beaten.
Dragging her broomstick besides her as she entered slowly, she kept her blurry sight on the floor and let her feet take her by habit on the topmost landing, where the thunder was loudest, the rain beat heaviest, and where her owl roosted so placidly. Isis, the white and silver lumnescent owl hooted concernedly at her mistress as she watched her collapse against the wall in front of her.
Isis hopped and flapped to her, perching on her knee and pearing into her rain and tear streaked face. Releasing a long, low hoot, Isis stretched a wing and flapped it, sending a puff of air in comfort.
Jade looked hallowedly up at her owl and managed a feeble lift of the side of her mouth. She closed her eyes and sought some sort of inner solace, trying to keep her sobs in. It was the last game. The last chance. She figured that the others would be up in the Common Room, perhaps trying console each other... but Jade didn't was consolation right now... She closed her eyes once again and inhaled deeply. Jade knew that she was being selfish right now... but she really didn't think that she could face any of them at the moment.
The black haired prefect raised a surprisingly steady hand, and stroked Isis's soft, warm feathers, listening to the growing storm.

Though the Owlery appeared empty other than the many birds and the lone Ravenclaw Prefect gracing its cozy interior, Jade was not alone in watching the storm this night.
It was easy enough to miss the third party; the gloom of the storm shrouded the wide room, which was illuminated only by brief flashes of blue-white lightning. The semi dark of the room leeched away all the colour, washing the entire room in gradations of grey, and thus the gaudy clothes that would have marked her out as a curiousity in an instant in the light appeared as everything else in the room did, lifeless and unremarkable. And in a room full of small winged creatures, it was easy enough to miss the presence of another small, winged creature, though there the resemblance ended.
Ainala OceanCrest perched on the wire bars of a cage near one of the windows, sitting still for a wonder, other than the constant drumming of her legs against the bars. It was a sound no more noticable than the constant drumming of raindrops against the windowpane. Less, in fact. Her loose tye-dye pants swirled around her ankles, falling over her bare feet.
The sprite soon sensed that she was not alone. Turning her attention away from the window, which had held her enthralled much longer (as in, for all of five minutes) than could be expected, she immediately noticed the black-haired girl enter the room. Gossamer wings that flickered silver and steely grey in the dim light began beating rapidly, and the water sprite effortlessly lifted herself in the air and flitted over to where the Ravenclaw Prefect sat, stroking the head of an owl that Ainala presumed was hers.
"Hello, Jade," she greeted the girl, her usual aura of enthusiasm and ebullience startlingly tempered. The air of depression that Jade had gathered around herself like a cloak was enough that even the water sprite, innocent and normally oblivious, could sense it.

As she grew up and trained in the orders of the Aurors, Jade had been known for her awareness. Even as a child, her perception was something duly noted by the adults that watched her. She read, saw, and even felt a person's aura and presence, despite their appearance or lack of. But as she slumped against that wall and comforted herself in Isis's serenity, she failed to notice the presence of another entity in the sporadically lit owlery. It was until they spoke that Jade noticed she wasn't alone.
Recognizing the little sprite, she managed a little smile in welcoming and did her best to swallow her tears. "Ainala." Jade nodded in greeting, even though it probably went unseen in the gloom.

Her concern growing threefold, the sprite dropped down to perch herself on Jade's knee, ignoring the owl which was giving her a suspicious look. She peered upwards, trying to make out Jade's features through the grey. Her gossamer wings fluttered uncertainly and her tiny hands plucked at her brightly coloured tye-dye pants, which faded through just so many shades of grey in the colourlessness of the storm.
"Jade?" she ventured uncertainly, tipping her head to the side. "A-are you... are you alright?"
It was plain even through the darkness that she wasn't. Ainala, herself always almost dauntlessly cheerful, couldn't really understand the depth of such emotion, and couldn't begin to fathom how she might help.

Showing a weak smile, she nodded again slightly and made a movement that was almost a laugh and almost a shrug.
"I'll be ok." She managed thickly, sighing quietly, and feeling her exhaustion settling into her bones. "It was just our last Quidditch match..." Jade said, looking down and rubbing Isis's claws gently.

"I... I'm sorry," the sprite murmured hesitantly, tipping her head to one side to study the 'Claw Prefect. It didn't take much guesswork to figure that they'd lost the game, but even that deduction left Ainala honestly bewildered. Having never played Quidditch, she didn't understand the emotional highs that came with it--and lows as well, apparently. It was only a game, wasn't it?
Ainala fidgeted uncomfortably, then settled herself more comfortably on Jade's knee, releasing a little sigh. Figuring that maybe it was time to change the subject, she ventured, "Your owl is pretty, what's her name?"

Without missing a beat, she murmured a reply, but a sudden crack of thunder drowned her out, so she lifted her chin and repeated herself.
"Her name is Isis. She was the first thing I got when I came here..." Jade stroked her feathers in an almost dreamy way as she looked upon her, appreciating her beauty. The silver on the tips of her wings glittered brilliantly in the lightning filled sky, reminding the Prefect once again why she had named her after a goddess. The white of her feathers were so pure that it seemed the moon itself had lent its beams for her creation. "Would you like to pet her?"

The sprite started at the sudden crack of thunder, blue eyes widening in startlement, then she settled back and smiled ruefully.
"Oooh, yes," she responded eagerly in answer to Jade's question, edging nearer to the beautiful bird. Still, the small hand that reached out to stroke the owl was tentative; for all Isis's apparent serenity, that curved beak was quite easily capable of removing her hand. Likely her head, too, if the owl had a mind to do it.
But thankfully, Isis showed no such inclination; in fact, she seemed to be enjoying the caress. "Ooooh," Ainala murmured again, the tiny hand touching the owl growing more certain as the sprite smiled at the feel of the downey feathers, "she's so soft..."
Her gossamer wings fluttered a bit and she looked up at Jade. "Isis," she echoed the name happily, then tipped her head, her face about as thoughtful as it ever got. "You know, her name kinda sounds familiar..."

"The Egyptian goddess of the moon, well, among other things..." Jade answered in her same soft voice, straightening one of her legs that she had brought up to her chest, as she grew more companionable with the little sprite. Jade couldn't help it, something about the fey brightened her, no matter what her mood was. "When I first saw her in Diagon Alley, I immediately thought of the name. Reminded me of those pure, white linens that Egyptian royalty and diety always wore." OOC: sorry I've been so awful about replying to this I'm not even sure where I was going with it when I started it, I just was really sad
