I always thought that she was named after the character 'Hermione' in Shakespeare's 'A Winter's Tale' who got turned into a statue.

But then, Shakespeare's character was probably named after Helen of Troy's Hermione, anyway.
XD
Hm. She just took some names right from Latin route words, didn't she? o0; Like Lupin?

Yeah, Remus Lupin... Remus, as in Romulus and Remus, twins raised by a she-wolf; Lupin, as in Lupe, meaning wolf. How did I not guess what he was in that book?!
Also, Sirius, dog star, Black... Black dog. Doh! In fact, a lot of Sirius's family tend to be named after stars.
Um... apart from clues like that, they came from JK's head!

Lupin as in "Lupus" or "Lupine", actually.
(Romulus is Woof 1, I swear, Remus is Woof 2. See, Remus tried to say that he was Woof 1, and then Romulus killed him. See!? SEE!? THAT'S MY BOY ROMULUS THAT'S MY BOY!)
Ahem, yes.
Harry Potter was named after a boy that lived across the street from J.K. when she was a teenager. They weren't friends but she liked his name.
Arthur Weasley is named after the Legendary King. Ginny Weasley's name is short for "Guienivere" or however you spell it, and is the name of the Legendary Queen. Percy Weasley's name is short for "Percival" which is the name of one of the Knights of the Round Table. He was King Arthur's loyalest Knight. Ironically, Percy isn't the most loyal of Arthur's children.
Albus Dumbledore's name (Albus) means "White" in Latin. This can be seen in words like "Albino".
Parvati Patil's name is the name of the wife of Shiva, the God of Destruction. She couldn't give him any children because the...*cough*...process...of making children caused so much chaos it almost destroyed the universe.
Minerva McGonagall's name is the Roman name of Pallas Athena. Minerva wielded Her Father's weapon, the Thunderbolt, and His shield, the Aegis. She served as the defender of Olympia when her Father was not around.
Lily and Petunia Evans both have the names of Flowers.
Fred and George, though rumored to be named after the twins in "Gone with the Wind", are actually simply old fashioned names given to them by J.K. because she liked them.
The founders names are all alitterations. (like you needed me to tell you that.)
Edit: Oh YEAH! And as Sylph said, a lot of Sirius's family are named after stars:
"Sirius", as said above, is Alpha Canis Majoris, and means "Burning" in Latin. "Regulus" is Alpha Leonis, and means "Prince" in Latin. "Bellatrix" is Beta Orionis, and means "Warrioress" in Latin. "Andromeda" (The mother of Tonks) is M31, the Constellation in Andromeda. It means...actually, I don't know what it means, but it's Greek and has something to do with Men. (Andro) o.o
There.

Rubeus Hagrid is named after the mythological gamekeeper in, I believe Norse mythology?, Hagrid Rubeus.
I really like mythology, the only class I have ever gotten perfect scores in on almost all of the assignments. ;D

In French, it's "vol de mort", meaning "flight of death".
