"Master Tao Jin! Please! Let me stay! Grandpa! Don't make me go! Onegai!"
Piercing red-brown eyes stared harshly into her own, sending shivers down her spine, "You. Will. GO!"
Pika sat upright on her creaky bed, staring out into the black depths of the night. She couldn't fall asleep with all the thoughts running through her head, and especially with all the bumps and swerves the Knight Bus made.
Her grandfather, Tao Jin, was her martial arts master. Her teacher. And her only family who didn't look down upon her. At least that was what it was like before she got the invitation to Magic Horizons School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was loved by her grandfather and whenever her classmates beat her up, because she was the only girl there, Master Tao Jin would always scold them, hit each of them over the heads, and tell them to go back to their rooms for the day. After all the boys were gone, Pika and her grandfather would go practice martial arts all day. They would go picking apples in their spare time to give Mrs. Ko in order to make more apple pie. Afterward, Master Tao Jin would give her special lessons in defense and offense. Sometimes, they would go play in the forest. Pika remembered those warm red-brown eyes that used to look at her happily. In a proud kind of way. Not the way her parents looked at her.
A small trickle of tears poured down from her red-eyes. She had inherited them from grandpa. She loved the days she spent with him. But now...
"Master Tao Jin! Please! Let me stay! Grandpa! Don't make me go! Onegai!"
She squeezed her eyes shut tightly. Just an hour ago, Grandpa had shoved her into the bus, telling the busboy, in a strangely calm voice, to take her to Magic Horizons and that if she requested to come back to Mt. Hua, just ignore her. Pika had pleaded with the driver to take her back to her home in the mountains but the busboy and driver didn't listen. Pika had gotten into a fight with her grandpa. He wanted her to go very badly but she wouldn't listen to him for days. She didn't want to go. She didn't want to leave her home. The only place she felt loved. Where she felt safe...
From that day on, their grandpa-granddaughter relationship had went down hill. They got into fights constantly. She regretted it badly. Hadn't Grandpa once said not to do anything you would regret later on? She sobbed quietly. She should've listened to her grandfather. That way, she wouldn't have to leave him in such pain. She wouldn't have to leave him angry and dissapointed in her.
She held the sheathed knife she had earned from her grandpa for beating all the boys in a tournament. It was a simple knife, designed especially for her. The hilt was golden (it matched her eyes) and the sheath was a sheer black. The black that she was seeing outside the window right this minute. An ebony. She treasured it with her heart and soul. Her grandpa had made it with his own hands. Now that she thought on it, the knife might have a special magical property because whenever she held it, it gave off a red pulse. As if it were alive.
It was very possible her grandpa did add some magic spell into it...Pika had just recently learned that her grandpa was a wizard. She found out when Grandpa had laughed in glee when he opened the invitation and read it to her. Obviously, he had been at Magic Horizons before...So it was highly possible that he put a spell on the knife. She silently thanked her grandpa and stroked the sheath of the knife.
Slowly, Pika accepted her fate. She would have to go to Magic Horizons no matter what. She had a gift. The gift of magic. Like Grandpa. Grandpa wanted the best for her, she supposed, wiping away her tears. She stared out the window in a daze. Maybe life in MH wouldn't be so bad...
She would make her master, her teacher, no....her beloved grandfather proud.
