The Faerie Realm was an idyllic place for anyone who wanted to live in a place of peace and quiet. Situated near the lake, there was an ethereal beauty about the place, and a fragile serenity that the hardest heart would find appealing.
All of that was shattered in a heartbeat as something small and colourful came hurtling through the leafy green veil of the trees, and yelling excitedly almost loud enough to be heard back at the school.
Once this small and colourful something had slowed down enough that any startled observer would be able to see more than a blur, their first reaction would likely be that something that small could not possibly yell that loudly. Stretched out to her full height, this 'something' could not have possibly been more than ten inches tall, she was about as big around as the average man's pinky finger. She held herself several feet above the ground, suspended on rapidly beating wings that resembled nothing so much as they did spun gossamer, glittering myriad colours in the sunlight.
Her clothes matched the rainbow of her wings. She wore loose-fitting pants of cotton, which faded from a pale turquoise at the top through several shades of blue, ending in dark navy bands where they brushed her bare feet, and the material was splashed with darker splotches of colour all up the length. Her silk seafoam blouse was backless and sleeveless, held on by clasps around the waist and neck comprised of seashells. A thick sheaf of wheat-blonde hair cascaded over her pale shoulders, mottled with sapphire streaks, and picking up some natural wave as the blue-and-blonde fall terminated at around elbow length.
"Hiiii!" she called in a high-pitched voice that was nonetheless far from shrill. Her voice was something like the tinkling music of wind chimes, and would have been pleasant to the ear had she not been speaking so loudly. "Did anyone miss me?"
This was unlikely, as she had rarely visited the Faerie Realm, and hadn't been there in quite a while. Most of the inhabitants probably wouldn't know her unless they had met her elsewhere. In fact, had she thought about it, she would have realized that she had never, in fact, been to the Faerie Realm at all.
But she didn't break custom by stopping to think about it. Instead she perched herself on a slender tree branch, enjoying the feel of smooth bark under her bare feet as she bounced, unable to contain her excitement, and waited for someone to come along.
