It was early evening, not quite late enough yet for the sun to begin its nightly drop below the horizon. A few wisps of cloud trailed like smoke across the sky, white against an unending azure expanse. Below, the glassy surface of the lake, seeming to stretch almost as far as the sky itself, gleamed placidly in the warm glow of the sun.
A lithe figure of about medium height made its way towards the lake, coming from the direction of the school, and stopped near the water's edge. Gratefully, Hikalyn dropped to the white carpet of fine-grained sand, more winded than even the fairly long walk from the school to here would account for. She'd come with a book tucked under one arm, planning to read for a while, and simply enjoy the rare opportunity to sit back and relax. She'd even considered going for a swim, and had dressed for the occasion, wearing her swimsuit underneath Muggle shorts and a t-shirt. But now that she was here, she didn't really feel like doing much of anything.
She traced a finger aimlessly through the sand, watching the abstract lines it made as her finger burrowed through the myriad of fine grains, feeling strangely lethargic. Apathetic, even. Though it did make a nice change from the depression that had been following her around ever since Amy had shown her those scenes in the libray. At the thought, she stabbed her finger angrily into the ground, but even that motion lacked energy. She had told herself that she wasn't going to think about it, that there was no point worrying about it until it came. Logical though it seemed, she'd been having a lot of trouble holding herself to that. But now, it didn't seem to matter. It was ten years in the future. That was still a ways away, and who knew what might happen between now and then? Anything could change it. It didn't have to turn out that way. The whole scene seemed foggy in her memory now, surreal, that she hardly would've been surprised to wake up and find that she had dreamed the whole thing, that it had never really happened. Maybe it hadn't.
Hikalyn rolled over and lay on her back, pillowing her head on her book and staring up at the sky, resting one hand over her face to shield her eyes from the penetrating glare of the sun. She emitted a slight sigh; it really was too early in the season to be this hot, but she was positively boiling. Maybe she would go for a swim, just to cool off.
She didn't move, though. Instead she lay with her amythest eyes directed at the sky above her, hardly even moving, watching as little tails of white drifted across the indelible field of blue.

OOC: Okay okay, I'm working on it! Heh, I leve for a little while and everybody leaves. I thought you people liked me here.... ;D
Rowan approached tha lake, thinking of taking a nice wak, when he saw his boss. Deciding he should explain why he hadn't been in for the last three weeks, Rowan hurried over.
He looked the same as he ever did, with Salad Fork, his silver rapier, belted to his sdie, but now he also had a broadsword on his back, as well. As he came upon the young lady, he saw she seemed troubled. "Hi Kalyn. You okay?" Concern shadowed his voice.

"Hmm?" From her prone position, it looked like Rowan was upside down, and it took a couple moments to bring him into focus. She smiled, though it probably looked a bit silly, since she was still lying on the ground. She swung into an upright position, an action which caused her black curls to bounce energetically about her shoulders, and also caused a wave of inexplicable dizziness. She waited until it had passed, then nodded in answer. "I'm alright, thanks."
Her eyebrows rose when she took in the broadsword strapped to his back, something he hadn't been wearing when she'd seen him last. Come to think of it, when had that been? It had certainly been a while... And why was she so sure that that broadsword looked familiar? She couldn't imagine where she might have seen it before.
"And what have you been doing to keep busy?" she asked, gesturing vaguely to the sand surrounding them as if in invitation.

Rowan sat down on the proofered sand and shrugged his shoulders. Gesturing vaugly with his hand, he said, "Oh, I've been here and there."
He knew he should tell her what happeend, but for soem reason, he wasn't sure if he wanted too. The way she had looked at him when he first arrived seemed to say soemthing else was up.
He tried a weak smile, "Well, if you're alright, I guess thats better than all bad, huh?"

A small smile tugged the corners of her mouth upwards. "Yeah, I suppose it is," she agreed, pausing expectantly. Rowan didn't say anything more, however; he seemed to be waiting for her to fill the gap, but she wasn't exactly sure what with.
An uncomfortable silence fell, rolling over them in an inexorable wave, teasing and tingling until it almost seemed it was just daring one of them to break it. Still Hikalyn held her tongue, letting it stretch a bit as she studied Rowan. She was as perceptive as the next person, and it didn't take a whole lot to see that he was a little preoccupied as well. There was something different about him that was more than just the sword strapped to his back, just in the way he carried himself.
Still she hesitated, not really sure how to frame her question. Finally she settled, if a bit tentatively, for a simple, "Is something wrong?"

OOC: *realizes he has to make something up now* Wow, I've been away for a while...
BIC: Rowan shrugged, a slight movement of his shoulders. "Not too much. I'm alive." He tried a tentative grin, "How about you? You look like you've seen the apocolypse."
After considering that Kalyn's experiances were just as strange as his own, usually, he decided this wasn't entirly out of the realm of possibility. and finished with a stammer. "O-or something..."

His remark pulled her lips upward into a half smile again. "I look that bad, do I?" she asked wryly, but her tone made clear that she was only teasing. She fell silent for a moment, and now it was her turn to shrug, a barely perceptible movement of slim shoulders. "I'm just tired, I suppose. Juggling school and work and all... you know how it is." Her voice trailed off into nothing again, and she turned her gaze out back over the lake, watching crystal clear waters wash up onto the creamy blank canvas of the shoreline, then retreat again to the safety of the glassy depths. She glanced back at Rowan, not quite sure where to take the conversation from there.

Rowan leaned back, and glanced at the other. Deciding to try a different track, he veered off into other territories.
"So.. What have you been up to?"

She shrugged. "Oh, this and that...it's been rather eventful around here, actually," she added after a moment's thought. She supposed she'd become so used to things being 'eventful' that even some of the stranger incidents around here didn't particularly stick out in her memory. Vaguely she wondered whether that could be considered a good thing, or a bad, but she quickly dismissed the thought. It was neither; just the way things were.
Presuming that he hadn't heard, she filled him in on the incident that had happened in the Entrance Hall a few weeks ago, which had ended up leaving them with half their front doors missing, and the strange amber-coloured amulet. She left out Chantelle's theory about what it actually did, though; for all that it seemed to make sense, it was still really only speculation.
The short silence that followed was almost relcutant, and Kalyn hesitated before speaking again. Then she shrugged, an abrupt, irritated motion, though the irritation was focused inward. "And, you should know...Gaftler's loose." Anger hardened her voice, anger at Lorry, anger at herself. It still amazed her that someone could be that incredibly stupid, despite the fact that she'd had a while to get used to it.
She shook her head as if to clear it of the cobwebs, looked back over at Rowan. Genuinely curious, but also needing to change the subject, she asked, "And what about you?" Her gaze drifted briefly to the broadsword he wore strapped to his back, convinced that she'd seen it before somewhere, before coming back to meet his sea-green eyes.

Rowan found the news of Eurus' release disturbing, though not as much as he should, perhaps, as he didn't know that the demon lord had been captured in the first place.
His questions were forestalled, however, by the young woman's inncoent query, to which he merely shrugged his shoulders. Deciding that it would be best to get it out in the open, he used this opprotunity to try and sneak the events in. "Oh, I was having an..extended visit at the Valkerie's place. That was after the Forest Lycans tried to kill me in my sleep, which was when I was in the hospital wing recovering from an accident which resulted from a meeting with Kaiser."
He shrugged again. "What about Eurus?" he asked, innocently.

So that's where she'd seen it before. The sword belonged to Kaiser. She'd only met the Valkerie once or twice before, but now that he'd prodded her mind in the right direction, she recognized it. She only nodded at his account of events, as if they'd been nothing unusual. All in a day's work, really, when you attended a school like Magic Horizons...Or worked at the Ministry.
At his question regarding the demon, she could only shrug slightly. "What about him? We can't do a whole lot at the moment. The first move is his to make." Though she affected indifference, it was clear that she didn't like such lack of control. Having a demon that powerful running around at God knew where, especially one who had such a personal hatred for you and your companions, wasn't really one that lent for a good, sound sleep at night. She shrugged uncomfortably, as if trying to shrug the demon off. She wished it were really that easy.
Suddenly she lifted her head to give Rowan a bemused stare, her eyebrows raised. "Wait... the Forest Lycans try to kill you in your sleep while you're in the Hospital Wing," which raised the question of why there would be Forest Lycans in the Hospital Wing anyway, "which results in you ending up in the Valkerie Hideaway? I'm not sure I follow..."
