A redhead approached the Quidditch Pitch with a gleam in his eye. He’d always loved flying. Floating in the air always seemed more natural to him than any form of ground transportation. He grinned. Those who knew him were well aware of the uncanny grace he gained on a broom. However, with both feet on the ground, Aylen would still manage to trip. As if to emphasize this particular fact, he suddenly landed on his rump, seemingly without reason. “Ow,” he muttered. He quickly stood back up to see if anyone saw him fall. To prevent further embarrassments, he hovered on his broom to wait for his friends.

"I saw that!" Rezna called over as she came on to the field. She didn't like embarrassing people but it looked like this was a constant thing for poor Aylen. Really, she hoped he'd take her comment lightly.
"Having walking difficulty?" she asked her teacher as she got closer. "Don't worry, I'll be worse on a broom. You can take your revenge then."

Aylen jumped at Rezna’s voice. “Oh...uh...saw what?” he asked innocently. “I, for one, did not see a thing.” With that, he began whistling tunelessly and pretending nothing had happened. “Anyway, Rez, did you get a broom? You could use a school broom....” Aylen grinned. “Or you could ‘borrow’ my sister’s. Anyway, you never know how bad you’ll be on a broom until you ride one, so don’t be so pessimistic.”

"I'm not being pessimistic," she retorted. "I'm merely being honest. Oh, and I didn't bring a broom since I never bothered to get one. So... where are the schools' brooms?" she asked looking around. Really, she was getting more and more nervous as she looked at Aylen hovering in mid-are.
'Can I do this?' she kept asking herself.

Aylen pointed at the shed at the far end of the pitch. “The brooms are in there. You have to be careful, though. Some of them are disagreeable. And whatever you do, don’t choose a Comet. Their performance is horrible. The Cloud 9 model is especially nasty to newbies at flying, so don’t go near that one, and that’s all I can think of right now.” He said all of this very fast without taking a single breath. He grinned. “Got all of that, Rez?” He continued to hover in front of her.

"No," she replied with a smile. "But you do, so how about you fly along with me, since that is so much safer than walking, and show me which one I can take. After all, you lost me after the Comet comment. Didn't you say I'm to learn flying on a broom," she asked teasingly.

“Oh! Erm...right.” He smiled sheepishly. “Come on then.” He leaned forward a tiny bit, urging his broom to advance. “Lesson one: the harder you lean, the faster the broom goes.” He floated at a brisk walking pace towards the shed. “Hurry, now. It’s killing me to be flying so slow! I’ll show you a good broom.”

"Fine," Rezna said in an exasperated tone and began running toward the shed. Elexi, her brother, was really into muggle sports and she was his personal trainer. It seemed that it was her who got the training though. Now she was one of the fastest runners among their friends.
Looking up, she saw that Aylen was also quickly increasing his flying speed.
'Is this better?' she asked him in her mind. However she was taking his lessons into account. 'Ok, lean hard, fly hard. That's simple.'

As he reached the shed, he increased his speed. When he was mere inches from the wooden building, he made a nearly hairpin turn and made a sort of somersault with his broom. An image of his siter muttering "Showoff" came to mind and he grinned. Aylen dismounted and waited a few minutes for Rena to catch up. "Miss Lardale," he said in a jokinly formal voice. "I present to you the school brooms." He opened the storage shed as if announcing a duchess. "After you, my lady," he said in his normal voice. His trademark grin never left his face as he bowed.

"Why, thank you mi-lord," she replied with polite nod of her own. As she walked inside, she pulled her wand out of her pants' pocket.
"Lumos," she said quietly, and the shed filled up with light. Inside, tons of brooms lay stacked up on one another in no apparent order. Their colors intermingling to present a color catastrophe. Rezna took a deep breath, wondering how on earth Aylen was going to find a good one in all that.
"So Mr. Hawkins, which of these beauties is to be mine?" she inquired with an exaggerated flourish of her arm towards the brooms before them.

Aylen entered after Rezna, but he didn't seem at all fazed by the mass of disorder. He seemed to know exactly where he was going and after a bit of rummaging, an old broom with a mahogany handle appeared in his hands. He shook the spiders out of it and offered it to the girl. "A Nimbus. It's an older model, but no less reliable. It's not going to be too fast; it's too old. But I think it'll be good for you, being a beginner and all."

Rezna smiled as the boy found his way easily around the mess. The broom that he offered her seemed in a good enough condition.
"Thank you, Professor Hawkins," she replied with a polite nod. With broom in hand, she walked out of the shed. Turning to look behind at her teacher she asked, "So what will my second lesson be then?"

"Hang on, my dear pupil," Aylen grinned in response. "Let's see if you can actually fly on the broom first." He set down his broom so that it was on the ground to his right. "First," he exlplained. "You have to do what I'm doing here. Put it on the ground beside you on the same side as your wand arm. Next, say 'up' firmly to it and it'll fly to your hand. You can't be afraid of it; it can tell. You have to want it, get it?" Aylen held his hand over it and demonstrated. His broom flew immediately to his hand. "Now you try."

"All right," she said. Placing her broom on her right side, she raised her hand over it and said "Up" in a commanding tone. The broom didn't move for a few seconds, then rose slowly into her hand. Rezna smiled. She wasn't afraid of the broom, just flying itself. It was as Alylen said, she hoped she could do it.
Wrapping her fingers around the Nimbus, she turned to look at her teacher next to her. "That good enough?" she asked with a grin.

"Good enough?" Aylen smirked. "Not even close. That was the easy part. If you didn't pass that, you just don't want to fly. By the way that broom went to your hand, I can tell you're not a believer in flying yet." He shook his head. "Well, I think I'm just going to have to convert you. Put your leg over it," he commanded. "Make sure you're comfortable." He then explained how to grip the handle. He adjusted any mistakes Rezna might have had and declared. "Alright, now you're ready to use Lesson One. Still remember it?"
