"Okay, half a foot to go," Chantelle whispered to herself, yawning. She had definately started this Transfiguration essay too late. In fact, now the library's only occupant was her, and the only light came from a small candle on the desk which had almost faded.
"Stay awake," she whispered more urgently as she felt her eyes begin to feel heavy. Within seconds of saying this, the young girl had fallen into a nightmare.
Channy was standing back in the entrance hall with the amulet in her hand. But this time, she didn't move out of the hall and no-one came, despie the deafening crash. All of a sudden, Chantelle started going cold, then hot, then cold again until she was shivering violently, both in her dream and in reality. Then, a huge monster came out of the highly polished amulet and walked around her.
Of course, the small Ravenclaw was so scared, she could no longer move. But she flinched slightly, once again the dreaming Chantelle and the girl in the dream, as the monster put both hands on her shoulders and began steering her towards the forest.
In reality, Channy had started sleepwalking, leaving her books, parchment, quills and bag behind. Stepping out into the corridor leading outside, she heard another loud crash in her dream. One which woke her up with a start.
"Wha...?" she asked, confusion in her voice. She found herself shivering again and pulled her cloak around her, trying to figure out where she was...

Hikalyn was making her nightly rounds, one of her duties as a Prefect, when she heard a crashing noise come from inside the library. She quickened her pace, one hand automatically coming to rest over the pocket which stored her wand. It was probably just one of the younger students sneaking around--maybe trying to get into the Restricted Section, that was always a popular attempt--but...
As she neared the library, an expression of surprise flitted across her face. Standing alone in the corridor, wrapped up in her cloak, shivering violently and looking utterly confused, stood Chantelle, the first year Ravenclaw whom Hikalyn had met up with a few times before.
"Chantelle, are you all right?" she asked, approaching the other girl. "What are you doing up this late?"

Chantelle was still looking around, trying to figure out where she was when Hikalyn found her. "I... I don't know," Channy answered after a while. She tried searching her mind, trying to think of what she was doing before.
"I was in the Entrance Hall... How did I get here?" the small girl asked, blinking a few times, trying to figure it out. But when she looked at the ink spills on her hand, she thought she must have been writing something, and looking behind her sat the library. But what was she writing?

Hikalyn paused, studying the other girl as if something about her posture might give away the answers she was looking for. Needless to say, it didn't. "I... don't know," she answered finally, concern evident on her features. "Are you sure you were in the Entrance Hall? It looks like you were doing homework or something... Maybe you just fell asleep."
Late as it was, that was certainly believable. Still, she couldn't help but think that Chantelle didn't look entirely well. But again, that could just be a result of the late night. At the thought, Hikalyn put a hand to her mouth, covering up her own yawn. She wouldn't mind being able to fall asleep herself.

Chantelle's eyes widened a little in realisation. "Oh gods! That was it! Homework... got to get it done, she's going to kill me!" in a state of panic, the young girl went into the large room again, looking for the dim light of the candle.
Sitting back down behind the parchment, Channy had to squint in the dim light to try and read what she had written, but her train of thought had been completely lost.

Hikalyn chuckled a bit. "Yeah, I'm a little behind on homework myself." A little? She wished it was only 'a little.' She sighed, a slight exhalation, and then went over to sit beside Channy at the table. Seeing the girl squint in the dim, flickering candlelight, she pulled out her wand. "Lumos." She blinked as the wand tip ignited, bathing the library in a soft glow. After the near total dark, it seemed bright as daylight.
"Maybe you should just get up early tomorrow morning and do it," she suggested. "I never could manage to do assignments well when it was this late myself..."

Chantelle jumped a little as a light came from behind her. To her eyes, it felt much brighter than the light 'lumos' would normally give off. Almost shielding her eyes from it, Channy shook her head. "No, it's got to be done now. I'm going to the Minis..." the small girl cut herself off here. She'd probably already let the cat out of the bag.
She mentally kicked herself for even just saying that, and she dared not turn to face Hikalyn.

Hikalyn blinked. For a moment, she said nothing, wondering if she'd misheard. After all, Chantelle had been mumbling, and she'd cut off before she had actually finished the thought. But no, it was close enough. "Chantelle?" she asked quietly, wishing that the girl would turn around and look at her, rather than the floor. "Why are you going to the Minsitry?"
Judging by the way Chantelle was carefully staring at anything but her, and her reluctance to speak, Hikalyn wasn't entirely sure that the Ravenclaw would answer her. But then, she didn't really need to. She'd already approached Hikalyn about the amulet (ooc: speaking of which, you planning to finish that thread?) once before, and Hikalyn had told her that it was at the Ministry. It had been weighing on Kalyn's thoughts ever since; apparently she wasn't the only one.

Too tired to think up an excuse as to why she was going there so early in the morning, Chantelle turned around to look at Hikalyn and decided it would just be easier to tell the truth.
“I’m going to see if they’ve found anything out about the amulet,” Channy told the Prefect, showing no signs of a lie or a joke. She had planned to get up earlier than anyone else in the commons and then make it back before the final day of classes, hoping that no one would notice she wasn’t at breakfast. Suddenly, a chill went through the girl and she pulled her cloak tighter around her again, wishing that it would all stop. But the only way that could happen, was to see if it was the amulet. But maybe it was just her being silly. After all, she had refused to go to the hospital wing when it could just be a summer cold… but to the small girl, it felt so much more than a cold.
Ooc: Yes, I am planning on finishing it… I’ll try and sort it out either tonight or tomorrow – at least get the next post up anyway

Hikalyn nodded to herself, not really surprised. "I don't think they have," she said in quiet response. "Or at least if they have, they haven't mentioned anything to me." On the other hand, that didn't mean they hadn't discovered anything. Magic artifacts wasn't her department, after all. Maybe they just saw no reason to.
She'd ask them herself next time she was in. Something told her it was important.
A thought occured to her. "I don't know how far you'll get," she warned the younger girl. "People like to hold onto their secrets." She regarded Chantelle thoughtfully, brow drawn down into a puzzled frown. She hesitated a moment before speaking again. "Tell me, Chantelle," she implored finally, "what's so important about the amulet?" Well, aside from the obvious. But she didn't really need to speak that part aloud.
She fell silent and waited for the other girl to gather her thoughts, only half expecting an answer.

It took Channy a while to think how she could put the story in a way which makes sense.
"Well," to begin with, she figured maybe it would be best to ask Hikalyn a question before she carried on. Otherwise, the other girl might think she was going mad. "Since you picked up the amulet, have you felt really cold and dizzy?" she asked uncertainly.

Hikalyn hesitated for a long moment before answering, as if by waiting she could sort the question out better in her mind, make it make more sense. "No, not really...but then," she added slowly, "I never touched it directly." She'd had no idea what its properties were, but she'd seen one girl who'd picked it up go into some sort of trance. She hadn't been too enamoured of the idea of touching it after that, and so had scooped it up in a piece of fabric. But even through the material she'd felt...something. She resisted the urge to reach up and massage her temples. Her head was starting to hurt.
"So what you're saying," Hikalyn mused more to herself than Chantelle, working it out as the pieces clicked together neatly in her mind, "is that the amulet makes whomever touches it sick?"

Chantelle shook her head. “No, well maybe, well yes,” she said, obviously confused herself. “But watch this,” the young girl continued, pulling her wand out and trying the ‘lumos’ spell. But the end of her wand didn’t light. Usually, any first year student would be able to do that spell. Channy could do it before too. But now, all of her magic appeared to be gone.
“See, since I picked it up, my magic’s been fading, and now, it’s gone,” she explained quietly, a little shame faced too. After all, she wasn’t exactly the brightest student, and she was only just averaging her classes, but now she was slowly slipping to being bottom of every class she took.
A few times, Channy had thought of going home. After all, was there any point in being at a magic school if you couldn’t do magic?

Hikalyn only nodded as she tried to assimilate all this, rubbing her temples with her fingertips again. That headache was nearing a full-blown migraine now. "I guess it's a good thing we got it away when we did, then." Sucking in a deep breath, she tried to order her thoughts, a task which was becoming inceasingly difficult. "Maybe we should go see Kasey; if was caused by the amulet, there has to be some way to counteract it. She might have some ideas..." She was speaking to herself as much as Channy, trying to make sense of it all. A magical artifact that made people who touched it sick? It seemed like an utterly ludicrous concept to her. But then, people had come up with stranger things over the years.
She shook her head, an unconcious, helpless gesture. "But I don't really think she could do anything about..." Losing the magic. The thought was almost enough to make her shiver. Magic was an integral part of any witch or wizard. Losing it, she imagined, would be much akin to losing an arm or a leg.
She didn't bother to finish the thought. Her voice trailed off into a long, helpless sigh.

“There’s got to be something,” Channy whispered to herself, falling back against the back of the chair, mainly hoping for reassurance more than anything. “I mean, if I go to the Ministry in the morning and explain about it all, then maybe they can try and do something about it, right?” she asked. Hopefully she wouldn’t have to go and see Kasey though. The small girl liked the blonde nurse enough, but the Hospital Wing scared her senseless.
It was then it hit her, she had no idea who she would need to go and see at the Ministry, and so she’d just be going in and hoping to find someone who could help her. And if she was going in that early in the morning, the person she needed to talk to might not be there anyway.
