The bell to announce the beginning of classes rang through Magic Horizons on the first day of term and the corridors seemed completely empty apart from to the spiders that crawled around, hoping to be on the other side before hundreds of stampeding feet exited classrooms left, right and center of the corridors. Yet, there was one classroom that was missing an occupant. Although her class was there and waiting, the professor had not yet made an appearance. Instead, she was running through the corridors, short brown hair whipping behind her as she tried to find her allotted classroom. Eventually, she found it and opened the wooden door with a smile. This professor was Professor Bean, the new History of Magic professor. “Good morning, good morning. Yes, it looks like you’re all here, sorry I’m late,” she breathed, making her way to the front desk and sitting on it casually, looking around all of the bright, young, rather tired faces of the students in front of her. “Yes, right then, what did I do with…” Vicky started, rummaging through a pile of parchments that she had brought in with her trying to find her lesson plan. “Gotcha!” she announced after a few seconds, proudly holding up a piece of parchment and scanning it quickly. “Right then. Good morning and welcome to History of Magic! I know what you’re all thinking. First thing on a Monday morning and you get this? Well, I’m here to try and not make it as boring as you were hoping, but hey ho.” Grinning a little, she looked around once more. “Okay, before you get started on your first assignment, please can you write a short paragraph on the top of your piece of parchment and just tell me who you are, what house you’re in and what you enjoy outside of classes, and then take a textbook from my desk… well, when they’re found you can get one, and open it up at page six. For today, we will be looking at the Salem witch trials, just as something to get us started. Please begin.”<br> And with that, Professor Bean went to the cupboard (the only organized thing in the room) and pulled out a few dozen textbooks before placing them on her desk. ooc: okay, you're textbook's here. Sorry for shortish post, I've got to run to a class of my own! www.freewebs.com/homtxt/history_of_magic.htm

Athena smiled and took out a piece of parchment and wrote: Athena Takadea Gryffindor Student Outside of classes I enjoy spending time with my friends and learning about the Magical world.
Athena then walked up and put the parchment on the teachers desk and took a textbook. She read the passage then began to work on the assignment.
1) What would you have done in the shoes of one of the witches or wizards in Salem while the witch trials were taking place? I would have laid low and only used magic when absolutely neccessary. I would have lived muggle like until the witch scare passed for them and things settled down.
2) What spells could a witch or wizard have used to keep themselves alive whilst any spectators were waiting for them to suffocate? One could preform an anti burning charm and fake it until they decided to leave.
3) What other instances do you know of where witches and wizards have been accused and sentenced to death? Do you know of any who got caught more than once? I'm afraid that i don't. Up until this point i have lived as a muggle in a foster care system because i had not known i was a witch.
Athena then approached the desk and handed in the parchment.

History of magic could either be an entertaining subject, or a dull one, depending on the Professor. However, Marina had yet to see a dull Professor within the walls of this school, so she was really quite hopeful. Walking into the class, a bit early perhaps, she was rather surprised to see that the Professor was not yet there, and watched the stragglers file in, sighing with relief when they noted that their instructor had not yet arrived. Relaxing herself in her chair, she played absentmindedly with the Prefect’s badge, still very much in shock of having received it. She liked to believe that it was well deserved, but sometimes she wondered if she just had a very high opinion of herself.
Nina grinned from ear to ear as she watched the Professor enter the classroom breathlessly. She’d taken it upon herself to tour the school several times over and find all her classes before she came here, but navigating could be very tricky, and she sympathized. At least, she could be a pleasant student, so she relaxed her facial muscles and sat back, watching the teacher with unfaltering attention. The woman most certainly seemed entertaining enough, for she was already smiling, anticipating the class. The Salem witch trials were most certainly an interesting topic, whilst some of Magical History was just as boring as anyone could imagine. Standing up, she walked to the Professor’s desk, grabbing a textbook and muttering a polite “thank you”.
She had to think for a moment after she pulled out her quill and ink, wondering if she had any idea what she was going to say in response. History was one of those factual subjects that she liked so much, however, she often found her knowledge of it rather limited. It never seemed to apply to her future, so she held limited interest in the details, rather preferring to know the facts and fill the rest in when it became necessary. Finally, exhaling a deep breath, she set the tip of her quill steadily to the paper. At least the first part of the assignment would be easier, judging that it was about herself and not some people that lived over three centuries ago.
A little about me
I’m Marina Roeswood, Slytherin Prefect and Beater. I’m a scholar by nature, and outside of school, I do enjoy doing a fair amount of reading, talking with friends on occasion, and also, playing quidditch. I personally believe that practice makes perfect, so I’m constantly practicing small spells by myself and drilling on the quidditch pitch, preparing for the new season. Aside from that, I am normally doing my duties as a Prefect, or just sitting around, doing nothing.
The Salem Witch Trials
1) I would have tried to lay low and not get myself noticed, and tried to behave and act like a muggle in public. Though, I doubt I’d be doing anything overtly witch-like, so the odds of me being discovered over anyone else would probably not be that high. In the event that I were discovered, I might use a portkey or apparate to a safe location, or stay for the trial and then my execution and have a little fun performing for the crowd that gathered to watch me die.
2) I would have levitated myself a little to stop the rope from putting pressure around my neck, and done the rest by sheer force of acting. I would squirm, fight, make strangled sounds, and then fall limp and wait to be taken down off of the rope and escape. If I were burned, I would have used a charm to repel the flames, and maybe the bubble-head charm to prevent myself from suffocating on the smoke.
3) Similar witch trials have taken place all over the globe, including many in European countries such as England and Germany. These trials spanned over a long period in history, starting in the 1400’s and ending in the 1800’s. Many of these executions were carried out by muggle religious groups. Aside from that, the magic community has executed some of it’s own for horrendous crimes. Many followers of You-Know-Who were sentenced to receive the dementor’s kiss, which is considered by many to be even worse than death. I can't think of an example of one that was caught more than once, though my knowledge is considerably limited.
Finally, placing her quill aside, Marina sat back for a moment, satisfied as much as she would be with her job on the paper. Stifling a yawn behind her right hand, she corked the bottle of ink and put the quill away while the ink on her parchment dried. Stretching her legs as she stood, she ambled quietly to the front of the class, noticing that she was one of the earlier students to hand in their work.

Eleanor raised an eyebrow as the teacher rushed in late, but made no comment. After all, Magical Horizons was a bit of a mess to navigate, especially if you were new. She had had all too much experience with this herself, and considered it something of a miracle that she had managed to find her first class so easily.
She took a piece of parchment from her bag and unscrewed the cap on her ink bottle carefully. There had been too many ink-bottle incidents in her life to make a mistake again, so the Hufflepuff girl took care to place it well away from the area her elbow went sweeping across as she wrote. Dipping her old bluejay quill into the dark violet liquid for a moment, Eleanor thought about what she would write. It was easy, of course...
Eleanor Sel'shea Hufflepuff House I suppose outside of classes I usually like to read or to spend time catching up on homework. Sometimes I go out on the grounds for long walks, but I think it'll be colder here than I'm used to. I love magical creatures and experimenting with divination techniques.
"That should do it," Eleanor thought to herself as she rose to silently take a book from the professor's desk. She looked over the students in the classroom as she walked back to her seat, noticing with some dismay how bored some of them looked. History wasn't that bad...she flipped her book open to page six, reading through the questions before searching for the answers in the faded text.
1) What would you have done in the shoes of one of the witches or wizards in Salem while the witch trials were taking place?- I would have avoided using a Portkey until it was absolutely necessary, but it would be inevitable that I would want to get out of the "hot spot". Eleanor paused. What else? I would have tried to help as many of my friends as I could, even if they were capable of helping themselves. Was that too over the top? No, she decided...it was true.
2) What spells could a witch or wizard have used to keep themselves alive whilst any spectators were waiting for them to suffocate?- It was more common for the accused witches to be burned, in which case they could perform a flame-freezing charm and pretend to be in great pain. She wasn't so sure about this answer - Professor hadn't asked about burning, only hanging, but she didn't know anything about anti-suffocation spells.
3) What other instances do you know of where witches and wizards have been accused and sentenced to death? Do you know of any who got caught more than once?- Susannah Martin, Elizabeth Howe, John Willard, Ann Pudeator and Samuel Wardwell were a few of the nineteen witches and wizards who were hung, but Wendelin the Weird was particularly famous for allowing herself to be caught approximately nineteen times because she enjoyed it so much. For all we know, those nineteen reported hangings could all have been her in the various disguises.
That just about covered it, she thought. Eleanor stowed her ink bottle and quill back in her bag along with the book, carefully picking up the parchment so that the ink wouldn't smudge. She set it down on Vicky's desk with a small smile, once again returning to her desk to await the bell to end class. So far, she believed that this class wouldn't be so bad.

Post by Professor Windwaltz on Sept 7, 2004 0:20:25 GMT
Talon walked into the classroom, taking a deep breath of air, smelling the old books throughout the classroom. At last, a class he had longed to be in. A class that he thought he could excel at. He looked around the classroom at all the people sitting in their seats, and then, with a bit of surprise, at the teacher. It was the woman he had seen in the Entrance Hall but a week ago. He nodded to her, and then sat at his desk, listening to what she had to say, and then reading the board. He took out parchment, and then a pencil out of his robe pocket, his lucky pencil from Transfiguration. About me:
My name is Talon Windwaltz, I am sixteen years old, and I am the Head Boy of Magic Horizons. But you already knew that, after our meeting the other day. I am in the Gryffindor House, and I am a Historian, dubbed one by the Ministry itself. I do indeed love history, and know a lot about it reaching far back. I am also a Wind Mage, being able to control the winds from a breeze to a mighty tempest. You may remember my name ‘Windwaltz’, even if you were a child around the time. My Father, Sciezen Windwaltz, was the Head Auror until six years ago, and my Mother, Miranda Windwaltz, was a high ranked one. My Brother Sciezen works at the American House of Magic in Washington D.C.
The Salem Witch Trials:
1.) Very few wizards were persecuted during the time of the Salem Witch Trials, because most ‘witches’ were either female prostitutes, women who cheated on their husbands, or pagan women. Witches were, in all honesty, the ancients' way of explaining things they could not understand. The men who were killed were killed because of polygamy or pagan leadership. And I can not truly say what I would do in that situation, for I can’t really imagine myself in such a situation. Saying I would lay low would not be a worthy answer, for they would always find you in some way or another. Saying I would run away would be a cowardly thing to do, and yet saying that I would fight back would only prove more than existance of Witches and Wizards in the world.
2.) Well, it clearly depended on two things. A. Their skill as a Sorcerer and B. Their element. If they were capable of mastering the element of Ice, it would make things all too easy, for they would be able to freeze the fires around them. If not, they could use a basic freezing charm. The ice spell would be able to make the fire change from burning to cold, and only give the caster a little chill, while the freezing charm would change the pain to a tickling sensation. If in the case of being drowned, they could perhaps use gillyweed, or a way to cast a bubble around their head, or if they mastered the water element, they could breathe underwater.
3.) Many people were accused of witchcraft, but not all of them were real witches or wizards, for few witches and wizards actually made the pass over from the Old World. One who I am sure of surviving was Wendelin the Weird, who used, as I mentioned before, the freezing charm, which put a stop to the flame and changed it into a tickling sensation. She was said to have enjoyed it so much, she did this up to nineteen times in different disguises. Talon sighed and put his pencil down, muttering under his breath. He really hadn’t answered a single one of the questions, but challenged them with his own words. He would probably fail for sure. Shrugging, he rolled up the parchment, and walked over to the desk. “Here you go Professor Bean.” He turned around and walked back to his desk, waiting for his grade. 11 points

Kilik grabbed his quill and parchment and started writing.
1) What would you have done in the shoes of one of the witches or wizards in Salem while the witch trials were taking place?
I would have tried to stay alive and try to tell the spectators and the person who made my death sentance that witches and wizards are not bad they are just people who didn't choose the past of magic rather born with it if not on trial then i would lay low and try to leave
2) What spells could a witch or wizard have used to keep themselves alive whilst any spectators were waiting for them to suffocate?
Since the hangings were probably on a trapdoor they could use a levitation spell and pretend to choke or suffocate while they are safely suspended mid air, but they may not have their wands because they were probably taken away unless concealed, so they might not have used wands
3) What other instances do you know of where witches and wizards have been accused and sentenced to death? Do you know of any who got caught more than once?
No, but im sure there were and are many of them.
7 points Good try, Kilik. Though, try a little more detail and a few more examples – VB

Ashlle A. Rainier of Gryffindor House
I am the last remaining Heiress of the Great Rainier Name & fortune & I enjoy studying to become great & powerful so my dead relatives will not be ashamed of me. I also like white chocolate & Strawberries.
1) What would you have done in the shoes of one of the witches or wizards in Salem while the witch trials were taking place?
I would have used the oblivious charm to make them all forget what had upset them, & I would have helped smuggle the Prisoners out but only if they were real wizards & witches.
2) What spells could a witch or wizard have used to keep themselves alive whilst any spectators were waiting for them to suffocate?
They could use a Bewitched Sleep incantation to put the crowd to sleep then they could sever the rope with a severing charm. Or they could always apparate away & to the nearest port key.
3) What other instances do you know of where witches and wizards have been accused and sentenced to death? Do you know of any who got caught more than once?
I believe there was a wizard named Wendell the Weird who enjoyed burning so much that he tried to get himself burned again and again. This was of course due to the Flame Freezing Charm that was used at the time. Its effects were that it changed the properties of fire so that it's heat felt like a warm breeze. I could be wrong on the name of the wizard though.

Kalista opened her book and read. Her mind began to draw back in time and she began to think of what exactly would she do? Sure, she would say now, that she’d just use her magic and be done with it all, but how would she really act.
She sat back in her chair and thought before even taking out her parchment.
When she finally did take it out, she wore a serious expression.
1) What would you have done in the shoes of one of the witches or wizards in Salem while the witch trials were taking place?
Well, I think that I would have definitely used a Portkey and got the heck out of there, if it was at all possible. The thought of being hanged just doesn’t sit well with me.
2) What spells could a witch or wizard have used to keep themselves alive whilst any spectators were waiting for them to suffocate?
Well, as they are hanging, I would definitely have use some sort of weightless charm, or perhaps even levitation, though I would have had to be proficient in the use so as not to over do it and go sailing upwards instead of down with the rope.
3) What other instances do you know of where witches and wizards have been accused and sentenced to death? Do you know of any who got caught more than once?
Wendelin the Weird is the only one that comes to mind in this situation. Her story, to me, was really quite amusing and I can see why she did it. I think it would have felt nice to sit in a fire, soaking up the heat whilst letting the Muggles think you screaming in death when you were actually laughing with delight of the situation.
Finally, a bit about me.
My name is Kalista Karador the daughter of, I don’t know. I am a Slytherin student and like to learn as many things as I can. I wish to one day become a healer as the Ministry told me once I had the healing power. What that meant, I still do not know but I like people in general so, healing them, I think, would be a good profession for me.

I am a Half-Demon of Futal Era Japan. You might think this would mean I am very old. You would be right; I am 1337 years old. I am Part Dog Demon, part Elemental Spirit and part Witch all though in my time they were called Priestess. My elements are Wind and Fire and I wish to learn to utilize them better. My Totem animal is a Dog and my dog is InuYasha.
I named her after an old love, whom gave me my sword, The Tetsiga when he died, and taught me the "Iron Revere Soul Stealer" that has become my signature fighting move. I’d love to learn some more physical self-defense while I’m here & also I think being a Auror would rock.
1) What would you have done in the shoes of one of the witches or wizards in Salem while the witch trials were taking place?
I probably would have had to use the oblivious charm a lot. Also I would have helped smuggle the Prisoners out and to safety.
2) What spells could a witch or wizard have used to keep him or herself alive whilst any spectators were waiting for them to suffocate?
I would have apparated away & to the nearest port key.
3) What other instances do you know of where witches and wizards have been accused and sentenced to death? Do you know of any who got caught more than once?
A Witch named Wendelin the Weird enjoyed burning so much that she would get herself caught over and over. She used the Flame Freezing Charm, which changed the properties of fire so that it didn’t burn you, but actually felt good.

Kara walked into the classroom and took her seat quickly and pulled out a quill and a parchment. She then began to write down the questions.
1) I would have just kept the magic to myself and not show it around near muggle towns, or out of wizards areas.
2) i think the witches could have done a forgetful memory charm on everyone that decided to put them to death so they can forget about that moment and just walk away like nothing has happend.
3)I believe i have not because i never actually knew i was in the blood of witches or wizards, because both of my parents are dead so im afraid i would not be able to answer this question.
Kara got up and walked up to the Professor's desk and handed her work to her and smiled and returned to her seat.

Arwen who had been seated in a corner at the back of the class smiled as the teacher rushed in. She seems nice she thought to herself. Arwen stood with the other students and went to grab a textbook. Back in her seat she pulled out parchment, a quill, and her signature light pink ink. Reading through the information and the questions she smiled, then began to write...
Silmarwen Tîwele Hufflepuff House
A little about me My name is Silmarwen Tîwele (Earth Dancer), of Hufflepuff house. I am 14 years old. I was raised with my family in the palace of Sindarin, and am third in line for the Sindarin throne. Outside of classes I mainly read and write poetry, but I also like to practice my skill with a bow and arrow. Another past time outside of classes is to observe people, and common habits amongst themselves.
Salem Witch Trials
1. What would you have done in the shoes of one of the witches or wizards in Salem while the witch trials were taking place? I would have laid low, and acted as 'muggle-like' as possible. In the process of lying low I would have restricted my magic use to only times when absolutely necessary, I also would have hidden any and all magical items until things calmed down. Either that or I would have used a port key, as many others did, to seek refuge in a safer area.
2. What spells could a witch or wizard have used to keep themselves alive whilst any spectators were waiting for them to suffocate? Well it depends on two factors, hanging or burning? If sentenced to hanging they could use a levitation charm to lift themselves slightly so the rope would not cut off their oxygen, then act as if they are dying. If sentenced to burning they could have used a flame freezing charm and pretended to shriek with pain, when really all they would have been feeling is a soft tickling sensation.
3. What other instances do you know of where witches and wizards have been accused and sentenced to death? Do you know of any who got caught more than once? Witches and wizards were accused and sentenced to death all over the world. Indeed, Wendelin the Wierd enjoyed being burned so much that she allowed herself to be caught no less than fourty-seven times in various disguises.
Placing her quill carefully on her desk, she blew softly on the ink so it could dry quicker. Standing she walked to the Professor's desk and turned in her paper. Once back in her seat she began putting away her things.

Prairie Rose took out her book and began to do the assignment. The Witch trials had always interested her because she could never figure out why the wizarding world felt it had to be a secret. The fear of the unknown always posed a greater threat than the power of knowledge.
After reading the assignment she took out her parchment and ink and began to write:
Prairie Rose Slytherin History of Magic - Salem Witch Trials
A Few facts about myself:
My name is Prairie Rose and I was born in Texas to an upstanding pureblood family. I have one sister and one brother as well as many pets. I enjoy strange and especially poisonous creatures and I feel the world has little respect for these beings and as such are worse for it in the end. I enjoy sports especially Quidditch in which I can play most positions, however my specialty is Chaser and Keeper. I played on a youth league back in Houston were I did fairly well. Also I enjoy music of all kinds, even muggle. Music is an art that few people take to heart. It has the power to persuade, teach, evoke feeling, mesmerize, captivate, and even control. Great power can be found within music for people willing to use it. I have long wavy red hair and crystal blue eyes, standing only 5'2. However power can not be judged by size alone. At my last school I had top marks in all subjects and I hope to do as well here. Having been here only 1 day so far, I am still trying to get to know some people and find my way around the school. But I am up for the adventure and I hope to come out on top at the end of my journey with a wealth of knowledge to carry me through the rest of my life. I was placed in the Slytherin house.
The Salem Witch Trials
1) I would have used my powers to my advantage and proved to the others that magic is a good thing. You only fear what you don’t know or don’t understand. I believe with proper education muggles could see the benefit or being a witch or wizard and that they would in the end feel lucky to be our allies. Knowledge gives you life and ignorance will kill you.
2) If it were death by drowning I would have used gillyweed so that the muggles would have believed that I had drowned and hopefully be fooled quickly enough for me to escape. If it were death by hanging I would have used a levitation charm so that I would fall enough to appear to hang yet not enough to actually break my neck or die. Had fire been the method of choice I would have most likely used a polyjuice potion to transform myself into someone notable. I then would try my best to convince them that I was innocent and then quickly leave if the plan did not work, or use the flame freezing charm. Apparating would also be an option in a situation where running was the only course of action, along with port keys, however suddenly disappearing would only reinforce their fears of witches and wizards and further their cause.
3) The hunts were congruent throughout the world for over 400 years and in some cases longer. One known wizard to be killed multiple times was Wendolin the Weird burned at the stake 47 times in various disguises. It is doubtful that he was the only one, however he was one of the few to boast about it. The witch hunts were a constant figure in history until the Goblin rebellion in the 1600’s which ended in 1692 with the Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. This not only completes the separation of the two cultures but also lays the responsibility on the various Wizarding governments in each country for maintaining the secrecy of everything from Quidditch games to dragons. Over the years, for Muggles, magic becomes the stuff of fairy tales and legend.
In our culture today many witches and wizards have been sentenced to a fate worse than death for their crimes on the wizarding world. They received the dementor’s kiss which left them a soulless sleeve of an existence for which no one could possibly fathom. Other witches and wizards have been executed in the past such as Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington, better known today as Nearly Headless Nick. I am not sure if his execution was a result of crimes on the wizarding world or if it was a result of the witch hunts. But in the days prior to the Ministry of Magic some wizarding communities took matters into their own hands when dealing with law breakers. Usually the sentence was extreme punishment although I do believe there where various executions for witches or wizards that carried out the most heinous of crimes.

She placed the cork back on her ink bottle and rolled up her parchment. She proceeded to the professors desk and placed the parchment down with a smile as she returned to her place.

Silver almost died of glee at hearing that their first assignment was going to be of the Salem Witch Trials - her family had taken a trip their two summers ago, and she remembered it well.
Hurrying to find her things, she opened her textbook and immediately began writing on her piece of parchment, her excitement causing her quill's nib to break twice.
The Salem Witch Trials by Silver Stillwater, Hufflepuff Student
1) What would you have done in the shoes of one of the witches or wizards in Salem while the witch trials were taking place? I would have tried as best I could to locate the rest of the real witches or wizards in the village, using a basic Locater spell, and try to band together to find a way we could all leave inconspicuously until the charade was over. Ideally, I would also liked to save all the Muggles that died for the mistaken beliefs; but this would have been impossible without revealing ourselves to the world.
2) What spells could a witch or wizard have used to keep themselves alive whilst any spectators were waiting for them to suffocate? There were two methods of destroying 'witches' in that time, by burning them at the stake or by hanging them. If a real magical person was being burned at the stake, a flame-freezing charm was the favourite, allowing a slight tickle as the flames appeared to consume you as you screamed bloody murder, hoping they would believe you dead. If you were being hanged, I would probably suggest levitation, and a good ability to act dead. Sometimes the Muggles would realise that the hanged person had not died, and blamed on not dropping them hard enough; then they would progress to burning them at the stake, which is why so many people think that that was the only form of killing wiches that happened at that time. 3) What other instances do you know of where witches and wizards have been accused and sentenced to death? Do you know of any who got caught more than once? There were only a few real witches or wizards who were caught during the Salem Witch Trials, one of them being Samuel Wardwell, who I actually know because he is one of my very distant ancestors. A number of genuine witches and wizards were caught during that time because they did not have their wand with them when they were caught, therefore did not possess enough power within them to create the charms needed to survive. Wendelin the Weird enjoyed the feel of the flame-freezing charm, and the exhiliration of being 'caught' so much that she allowed herself to be burned at the stake nineteen times.
About Me: This is my first full year at Magic Horizons and I am really looking forward to it. My old school was not as large on community spirit, warmth and friendliness as MH is, and you can really feel the difference. I can already tell I am going to be very happy here. I am not very intelligent, or gifted with anything much, but I am very eager to learn and improve.

Vicky put the pile of parchment on her desk into a neat pile, ready to mark. Her first class had turned out to be a success... despite the scatty start.
"Okay, pack your things away. Class dismissed."
