Ace dropped his arms limply by his sides. His reason now sounded more like an excuse... and she wouldn't believe him, anyway, not many people did. They simply thought he'd been out of the picture too long, then came out all guns blazing for a massacre on the school... and could he blame them?
Shaking his head, Ace lowered his eyes to the ground, clenching his fists together. He was still angry that he had been weak enough to be overpowered like that. He knew, deep down, that it was impossible to escape from the grip of The Shadow, but it seemed to him that he had been stupid enough, or vulnerable enough, to let it happen. In short, he blamed himself.
"I was possessed," he said quietly, still not meeting Kiki's eyes that burned into the side of his face. "Me and Kai. We... killed. Claire and Rose got us back."

"Oh," Kiki said quietly and sat down. She could tell Ace felt terribly guilty about what had unfolded. She wished she could make him feel better. She wasn't even sure why she was feeling this way. There seemed to be a dull numbness to all of her emotions at the moment and so she could hardly react negatively to what Ace was saying.
"Ace?" Kiki asked, begging him to look at her with her tone of voice.

"What?" snapped Ace, angry that he had to be subjected to this kind of guilt and strength of feeling. He was a Vampire, wasn't that supposed to mean something? Didn't that mean that the only thing he was ever supposed to feel was that thirst for the kill, the lust for blood trickling down somebody's neck?
His eyes finally met hers, his now full of resentment, an unruly bitterness finally unearthed.

Kiki frowned.
"Calm down," She said and put a reassuring arm on his leg. "I just want to say one thing." She took a deep breath and looked Ace squarely in the eye.
"Why are you leaving?"

"What... how...?" Ace looked utterly thunderstruck for a moment, his green eyes a mist of confusion, before letting out a much more gentler than usual vampiric growl. He hated all these twists and turns Kiki kept throwing at him... what had ever happened to the simple life?
"Because I want to, love," he said eventually, keeping his own arm around Kiki's waist. He was so grateful for her lack of anger that he was going to cling on to whatever he could before her next wave of anger came. "I can't stay in one place, it just seems so... wrong."
He shook his tousled blonde head, knowing he couldn't explain. Only someone with an unnaturally long life could understand what he was thinking and feeling right now.

Kiki didn't say anything. She let herself be held - it seemed to be what Ace needed right now, mind you she needed it as well, as thought spassed through her head at a million miles an hour.
"Are you coming back?" She asked timidly.

"Maybe," said Ace immediately, anticipating this question. Stroking a strand of Kiki's hair, he spoke in a fast but stumbling voice.
"But, you know, if I do, it'll only be a visit. I won't... be here like this again."

"I suppose I should've guessed." She said, staring down at the hem of her dirty cloak.
"You were always the one for travelling." She rubbed her hands together - suddenley it was rather cold.
"I assume the next appropriate question is when?" Kiki wasn't asking these innocentely know. Her voice had a touch of hostility and ice to it.

Ace noticed her change in tone, and a chill of guilt seemed to clutch at his chest before his own anger set in, the tell-tale secret glint in his eye that allowed his victims to know they were in very real danger.
"Soon," he growled, his emotions running awry. Why did so many people think he owed them explanations? Why did they all seem to believe that he existed only to live up to their expectations of him, to keep them happy? That was no way for a Vampire to live... and every time something like this happened it only convinced him furthermore that he had to get away from this place.
"Not that I think it's any of your business," he snapped, unable to contain his glowering anger.

"All right then," Kiki said, standing, swaying slightly on the spot.
"It's none of my business, so I guess I'll leave you to it." The stand swam before her but nevertheless she managed to keep her balance and began to walk down the steps. However, after the first three the strength she had summoned deterioated and she stumbled down the next eight or so, only coming to a stop at the barrier at the front of the stand.
She took in a breath and sank down into a seat, not caring Ace was however many metres away from her, but trying to regain enough strength to travel back to the castle.

Ace had a half-hearted inclination to simply smile as she fell down the steps, but he gave himself a mental slap. He hadn't left yet... it was still OK to care that your friends were probably damaging themselves.
Grabbing the broomstick that lay forgotten at the edge of the stand, he walked over to Kiki, a small glint in his fierce eyes.
"Don't be an idiot," he hissed, grabbing her by the wrist and almost wrenching her arm right out of its socket as he pulled her upwards. She looked a mess - her hair was flyaway, and her eyes watery from all the almost-crying that had been done this evening. With a sneer, Ace commanded the broomstick to hover. He set Kiki up on it first - who kept flopping about and was very difficult to work with - and then he got on behind her, using one hand to wrap tightly around her middle, and another to hold on and steer.
"Keep yourself together love... we'll be at the Castle in no time," he said, kicking off from the ground.

"Acerbus Aceus," Kiki's voice had strength now and she was angry now.
"Get me off this damned broomstick." Her eyes glinted fiercely and all of a sudden she was reminiscent of the before-normal Kiki.

Ace gripped her even tighter, before remembering that she was a human, and not, therefore, as willing to be treated badly as any of his Vampiress friends.
"Just shut up and don't struggle," he growled, as they zoomed out over the Quidditch Pitch. "I'm good on a broomstick, so don't think I'm not more than capable of making it look like an accident, kapeesh?" He sniffed, and steered slightly towards the left, to the castle that stood like an illuminated mirage in the distance, hazed by a light mist that was rolling in from the sea beyond the lake.

"Then make it look like an accident. I don't care anymore. Don't you get it?" She asked. "You're leaving. That's it. There's no-one, nothing for me here. I assume I graduated this year, so no more responsibilities to the school. I've nowhere to go, so why not?" Kiki put her hand on Ace's, firmly enough to be able to move the broom slightly to put it into a slight slope.
"I've died before. Three times. I know what waits for me. I'm not scared." She leaned back so her mouth was just near his ear.
"Go on, I dare you,"

Ace sighed and kept on flying, swirling thoughts pulling a weight on his conscience.
"Ki, you're afraid. And I understand, OK? I've died three times too. Twice as a human, and once as a Vampire. You want it all to end because you can't make sense of it anymore, and there'll be no-one around to hold your hand."
The wind whipped around them, forcing Ace to rise his voice over the warning whistles of the late night breeze. They were nearly by the Castle now. "But I won't let you take the easy way out, and if I ever find out that you have, then don't expect me to mourn for you. You have a lot to offer the world, love. Don't be a coward."
He pulled up by the Gryffindor Common Room window, and the broomstick hovered. There were a few people still up, but Ace didn't care. He waited for her to climb in.
