Hmph. I would adore if J.K. Rowling went a bit farther into Snape's past, but I have a very strong suspicion that it's not going to happen, because even if he is a semi-main character (and totally awesome person, hehe) he is, in fact, evil, and the evil people don't usually get a nice flashback scene unless you're the one pulling all the strings. We do know that he had parents and lived with them for at least the first few years of his life, because of the flashbacks that Harry saw in book number 5 of Snape cowering in a corner as his parents fought. As for a wife, I doubt that, because in book number 6, when Narcissa and Bellatrix visited him, he lived alone in his house with Wormtail. As for siblings, I have no idea.

Firstly, Snape is not evil. Come on, people. Every good writer knows that the true identity of a character is not revealed until the final chapter - or, in this case, the final book. We are once again being misled... Miss Rowling is dangling a bone in front of us, and it looks tempting, but it is just another mirage. Snape killed Dumbledore because Dumbledore would have asked him to. Do you really think Severus's intellect surpasses Dumbledore's? Give the deceased some credit, please.
Anyhow. I believe that Snape was in love with Lily Potter. She rejected him when she started going out with James, and he turned to a life of darkness - being thwarted by your enemy can do that to you. He cared about nobody any more - except her. He was a Death Eater until he realised that the information he passed to Voldemort concerned the Potters, and would have begged Voldemort to spare Lily, even if he had to kill the others. Hence why Voldemort told Lily to step aside, and told Harry that his mother needn't have died... why would Voldemort have shown mercy unless he knew he would lose his most loyal follower for it? Snape, of course, turned double-agent when he knew that his master had betrayed him, and has been ever since. He only hates Harry so much because he sees James when he looks at him... but with Lily's eyes, the woman he loved. It kills him to have a reminder of everything he lost. Snape killed Dumbledore on Dumbledore's own orders. He didn't want to, thought about refusing, but knew he had no choice - it spared Malfoy from becoming a killer. Think about it - would Albus Dumbledore ever plead for his life? No. Dumbledore was not afraid of death. So why would he beg Snape for his life? He was actually begging Snape to do what he had to do - to kill him. And who knows what lies in store for Snape in the next book. All I know is what my instincts tell me, and I know in my heart that Snape is not the evil character JK has painted him to be.
Anyone think I have a convincing argument?

Me! ;D
Also, if Snape was the completely evil character Ms Rowling has written him as, wouldn't he be in Azkaban with the other Deatheaters? But then we have to ask why did he survive when he turned against Voldemort? Now that Dumbledore is dead, the one person that Voldemort feared is now out of the way.
What if Snape is going to be the final death in the Harry Potter series? It's all there... I think. After all, he would have betrayed Voldemort by working for Dumbledore, or he would have been there as a spy under Voldemort's orders. If it were the latter, I think Dumbledore would have figured him out by now, so therefore I'm working on the betrayal idea. With the only feared one deceased, will Snape be more vulnerable even if he has run away from the Dark Lord? Is that why Snape and Malfoy ran at the end of book number 6?
Wow.. I'd never thought of these before! -dances-
Rebuttal? ;D

As I just said in messenger I agree totally and believed that the moment I read the book... but snape very well might be a death int he 7th book do you think harry will believe snape if he tells him Dumbledore told him to kill him
also why would snape not kill Harry at the end of the book... he could have and Voldemort would have given him even more praise
plus think of it this way he has just gained himself in Voldemort's inner circle without reserve come on who has done more now for the dark lord besides Snape even Sirius's cousin can not say he is a traitor now
plus remember snape was bond by the vow he made, so it was either lose a spy for the cause or his life, which do you think Dumbledore would chose to lose

Why is everyone so keen in believing Snape is, in fact, the good guy??? *gets mad at people in thread (except Madrigal, since she gave bananas^_^)* Look, let's accept the facts: he kisses Malfoy's arse all the time in the books, also being friend with Narcissa and Lucius, as I see it. All his friends from teenagehood were meant to be Death Eaters. Bad influences, much? Then, he's abused by the good guys all the time in school. He's hardly accepted as a Slytherin, since he's a half-blood. He's searching power. He has trophies. He names himself "The Half-Blood Prince". He's exactly like Voldemort, only a little more calculated in his steps. He's cruel. He's mean. He's evil. He gets what he wants. He has power.
---
But I still think he's a great man. I like him. I don't give a monkey's arse if he's good or evil. He's an awesome character and besides, not all persons are black or white. We're all composed by different shades of grey. I personally would love to see him watch Voldemort die (puh-lease, don't tell me someone even consideres the possibility he won't die), then run away and become the next dark lord. But I guess that couldn't be, since that would mean the start of another HP book series and Jo doesn't want to write another HP book after the seventh one.
