*glomps Slyph* I agree with her. Slytherins aren't all dark and evil, I mean, hell, look at me! I'm like the antithesis of the steryotypical Slytherin and I'm prefect. Of course, the site is slightly different from the books, so I understand your argument. It's a good question, really. Perhaps the hat make acceptions. Just because Salazar Slytherin decreed that only pure bloods would be allowed, doesn't mean time hasn't changed that. Take for example the Old Testament of the Bible. The book is OLD! It even says so in the name. Some of the stuff in the old testament is rediculous, like never mixing foods together and only wearing certain types of fabric. I think that the guidelines for the houses, like the guidelines for the Catholic faith, have changed over time. Sorry 'bout bringing religion into this folks. I didn't do it to offend anyone, just prove a point.

Hey, what I can I say. It explains it, doesn't it?
Thirst for power? Ambition?
How the hell was Kaiser NOT a Slytherin?
EDIT: *reminds self* The Sorting Hat DID put you in Slytherin originally...I believe you fought it, didn't you? LIED about what it said?
Ahem, yes. I did do that....

no no remember the books have nothing to do with this site i keep hearing people compare the book with the site
here is the thing, The sorting hat sorts by the will of the house founder. Gryffindor's are brave because Goddric wanted his house to show that
but one of Slytherins qualities was being a pureblood
maybe Valdamort got in simply because he is Slytherin's heir.. bloodline maybe, his mother may have been a desendent of Slytherin

Here is the thing from the uber MH-ish website on Slytherin/s, which I hope can clear some troubles....
"More about Slytherin: Salazar Slytherin prided his house on being the one to contain the students most likely to be successful after their time at school - and he wasn't wrong, either. Slytherins are chosen for their determination, their desire for power and thirst for life generally. It is a misconception, however, that all Slytherins are Dark-inclined - it is simply that all the Dark-inclined people happened to be Slytherins. There are plenty of Slytherins who are not 'evil', and it has been known that friendships with Slytherins are nearly always the most intense and psychologically fulfilling, and friendships are more likely to turn into something more if a Slytherin-like persona is involved.
Salazar Slytherin is mainly famed for his ability to talk to snakes, but the recent discovery of the Chamber of Secrets (which was previously thought to be only a myth) perhaps shows us that the departed Slytherin has not yet revealed all his works.
Slytherins are most likely to be the students who work in large, well-paid companies, or in other cases they are the students who discover astonishing work all alone in a lab somewhere - all that we can be sure of is that the life of a Slytherin is one of the most interesting, and usually are the figures who go down in history, side by side with Gryffindors, their rivals. "
I personally see no line in there stating they have to be pureblood.........and as this is part of the underlying story to this site........I'd assume they would make it clear if you did need to be a pureblood ^_^
After all, simple fact; was Voldemort a pureblood? Answer; no Was he in Slytherin? Answer; yes

Aye. That's what I've been thinking this whole time, but never actually said -
A lot of great people that are here and have been here (great heroes, in fact) have been Slytherin. Slytherin who gave their lives to save it. Slytherin who clearly show signs of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff as well. Yet...
J.K. CLEARLY intends Slytherins to be evil asses who are all pure-blood elitists. This school simply has different qualities for Slytherins...
EDIT - what Lucius said, by the way. As for what Azrael said, I meant that Hogwarts students are all the evil asses, and MH judges by sheer quality.
After all, Kalyn's a Muggle Born and she's a Slytherin! Plus she fought on...actually, she was on both sides! GAR!

o.0 ok how about this in the book series from which this site is loosely based on. Slytherin house is mad eup of all purebloods. It states in the books that Slytherin only toke in purebloods
now here fine muggleborns could be slytherins
i am not asking that i ask how Valdamort could have got into Hogwarts Slytherin without being pureblood
or maybe i miss reread all the books
-goes off to read all five another 30 time-

Now, to repeat what I said before I went Chicken Little.
Lucius, I'm sorry, but this is just starting to seriously bug me -
Yes, I know we're all aware of what it is and don't bother to ask you to stop saying it 'cause we don't want to be rude but I need to help you here. It's Voldemort, not Valdemort. I mean, geez, you READ it man, not heard it and loosely tried to repeat it in words and did not know how to spell it.
*has same problem with McGonagall*

Heya Kai. Welcome back! Even if you don't really like me much... But yes, it doesn't say anywhere in the books that every single Slytherin ever in existence was a pureblood. It seems that way because Malfoy is the main Slytherin we see and he flaunts it. It is his family that prides themselves on having pureblood, so therefore it's a main part of the make-up of the character of the Malfoy's. Now, Salazar also prided himself on his purebloodedness, and may have said that he would only teach the purebloods. However, he has died, and the strength of mind and cunning of some people quite possibly overrode the lack of pureblood in their family line. Just remember, Slytherin left Hogwarts, so he couldn't have studied every student that ever came through Slytherin and checked all their family histories. I honestly think that thier cunning, strength of mind and possibly wickedness was enough for the Sorting Hat to put the students in Slytherin. Or maybe they are all purebloods, and Tom - because he wasn't Voldemort back then - was some random exception to the rule because he had so much evil potential.

then how come Slytherin does not take in the samrt or brave
because it syays int he book that Goddric put smarts into the sorting hat and it was told what qualities to put where
but i must be wrong, ity is me... kinda mutes the point

Yeah but, I think we're all forgetting something. Slytherin didn't just FAVOR Purebloods, he thought they were the only ones worthy of EXISTING. While I think Slytherin might've actually had reason for hating Muggle-borns (I.E. perhaps some traumatic experience during a witch hunt), but as far as we're concerned he was ready to commit genocide on them.
Why else would he have a huge freaking SNAKE-CHICKEN in his basement?
Hello Kiki! Heh. Don't worry about me, I hold no more grudges toward anyone. ;D

Not that purebloods were the only ones worth existing, perhaps, but definitely the only one's in his opinion worth teaching. And he only wanted to rid the school of muggle-borns, not the world. Still, with a snake like that it would have to end up as genocide, wouldn't it?!
It is a puzzler. But I agree with everything Kiki wrote. The hat detects personality traits, not family line. It's what I was trying to say, only put a lot more eloquently. Bah, I'm no good at expressing myself. But I think Azrael hit the nail on the head;
Was Voldemort a pureblood? Answer; no Was he in Slytherin? Answer; yes
