Rose nodded sharply. She wasn't sure if it was what she believed, but it was what she wanted. It was, she knew as she returned his smile - a soldier smile, she thought it was - what they would have to keep in mind. The past would never be the present, she told herself. Even if history was known for repeating itself.
"I mean, how could it?" She breathed finally. "You said you're different, and I am, too. I'm not sure if there's a shred of me that's untainted by - by time. Ice has been my only steady contact for the last year. Everyone else is - they don't have to be gone, but they don't want me now. It's been too much time." She pulled her arms off the table and wrapped her icy fingers around herself, twisting the tough fabric uncomfortably. "Even before everything - it's not like I - like I - was anything." She closed her eyes briefly, her teeth wrestling in a clenched way.
"Can we go?" She asked quietly, not opening her eyes for a long moment until she looked across the table. Her eyes were a little too shiny. "Can we, just - I'm get claustrophobic."
She was already halfway out of her seat, pulling her jacket more securely around her unhealthy frame. "Please, let's just - " She breathed hard, pressing her palm against the table to steady herself.

Ace's face expressed immediate concern for Rose's sudden change in attitude. Had she drunk too much?
He got up quickly and walked over to her, helping her on with her jacket - noticing she was thinner than perhaps she ought to be as she shrugged the jacket over her shoulders - and, after a moment's consideration, put an arm around her waist to steady her as they left the pub.
As they got outside, the cool brisk touch of the night air made little difference to the two Vampires. Ace looked at Rose with a sideways glance, still highly concerned for her wellbeing. "Are you alright, love?" Without waiting for an answer, he walked over to small stone wall that separated Honeyduke's from the main street, and sat Rose down upon it, sitting beside her. "What's the matter?"

Rose allowed herself to be moved in Ace's steady arms, ignoring the now whiskey-sodden voice of reason in the back of her head. She sat on the wall, shivering inside of her jacket and tucking her hands beneath her knees. She tilted her head up to the stars and the occasionally passing, deep purple cloud. She felt like her eyes were pitchers, and if she leaned forward, tears would fall out across her cheeks.
"Yes, I'm - " She swallowed and blinked hard, and finally lowered her gaze to the vampire's dark shape in the night. He was standing their, gazing at her with what she feared was genuine concern shining in his eyes. This notion, while for most people comforting, shook her even farther.
"I have no idea." Rose declared, pulling her hands from beneath her knees to run over her face. "I read once, somewhere, that if you think you're under control, you're just - just not going fast enough." Her hands swept up her face to her hairline. She wound her hair around her wrists to keep it from her face and knotted her fingers together at the top of her head. "And I - thought everything - and you're still - " She gave a frustrated cry which resembled most dangerously a laugh. The layers of emotion peeled from her facade and she sat their, feet dangling in the air like a child, her shoulders hunched protectively. The same little girl as she had always been.
"I have no idea what the hell is wrong with me." She admitted quietly.

Ace nodded, unsure of what to do now. She had seemed her happiest when they were making light conversation, laughing and joking and ignoring the painful shards of history that separated them; but now she was crumbling right in front of his eyes, and he had no idea whether he was supposed to come down and help her and risk her running from him again, or whether the mood could be lightened once again.
Deciding he'd rather take the risk and make sure she was alright, Ace sat himself on the wall beside her, and took a sidelong glance at the confused and broken face of his wife. Resisting the urge to put an arm around her, he inhaled - more out of habit than of necessity - and turned his eyes to the stars.
"I think it was brave of you to come back here," he said in a conversational but quiet tone, considering the diamond sky above them as though it had their problems written in it. "There's not many that can, without falling apart a little. I swore, the last time that I left, that I would never set foot back here - because here can break you in places you never knew you had. But call me a masochist, I guess, because I keep coming back. Even though I know what it does to me - to everyone."
He looked at her again, trying to read an expression as closed as it was open. It was there for him to read, but he'd lost the knowledge of how. "Don't beat yourself up for being affected. You're not untouchable - nobody is, or ever could be."
