"What is this?" Kiki broke her grip from Ace's hands and gestured to herself and he in front of her. She looked at him, eyebrows raised in question. "What is this?" She shook her head, refusing to let Ace give up on something that obviously meant so much to him. She smoothed a few larger, more visible rain droplets from the front of her cloak.
"If you are taking that approach, then doesn't it also mean that anyone you speak to - their lives are endangered?" She looked to the sky and then rubbed her face in her hands. "Does this meeting endanger my life? Yes, I think it would. But would you be the one to put me in a dangerous position?" Her eyes flickered to the ground for a moment before taking a shaky breath and continuing, ignoring memories. "I hope that you wouldn't. And it's that choice that makes you a good Vampire." She smiled at him. "You don't have to live up to the stereotype. You never really did, so why start now? Prove them wrong." She stepped closer to him to try to bring home her final message, sliding a hand underneath her chin so he looked at her squarely.
"Why let this stop you from doing something that would delight you so much?" She asked softly.

Ace was silent for a long time. He, like Kiki, was flashing a slideshow through his mind... of all the time he had been here at this castle, had he ever done anything truly wrong? All those times he spent hanging out in the Hufflepuff Common Room, had he ever harmed another student? Wasn't the only reason he ever left this castle because it had made him too humane, taming the inner beast, the Vampire in him?
With painfully new hope, Ace looked at Kiki, a smile beginning to creep across his face. He didn't need to say anything - he simply grabbed her and hugged her tight, laughing into her rain-soaked hair.
He was going to become Magic Horizons' newest Potions Master... he was going to stay here, in the only place he had ever become attached to... he was going to find his place in life, away from the darkness he used to believe he was betrothed to. He could fill his life with light.

Kiki squealed as Ace hugged her tightly, the jubilation and excitement that poured off the Vampire was seemingly contagious. She was suddenly light-headed: he was truly staying now. She laughed giddily and hugged him back, unable to erase the smile from her face. She could feel him acutely, his arms against her back, his face in her hair and she wondered if they would ever get a moment like this again.
She could never understand him completely. He was one of the most complex individuals she'd ever known and that factor of his personality was something that she loved about him. Kiki wondered if they would be able to catch up on a regular basis and everything would be like this. Surely it would be worth it, just to be able to hug him hello? Did she need anything more than this?
Brushing destructive thoughts into a corner for the moment, Kiki decided to be excited for Ace. She could deal with herself later.

Ace was surprised to feel something hot prickling behind his eyes, but the shock at feeling tears after so long stopped them from falling.
He pulled back from Kiki and looked at her, his green eyes reddened but an inescapable grin on his face. "I can't believe this..." chuckled the Vampire, feeling the excitement of his decision pulsating around his body. He honestly hadn't realised how much he had wanted it... until now. Gripping Kiki's hands, he grinned. "I can't believe I'm going to stay."

Kiki shared the excited grin that Ace was unable to part with and couldn't help herself but to throw her arms around his neck again. She squeezed him delightedly and laughed over his shoulder.
"I can't believe it either," She stamped her feet excitedly, the adrenalin contagious. Her eyes shone and she let go of Ace slowly, her violet eyes searching through his damp hair for the brilliant emerald ones hiding. She found them and a whisper escaped her lips:
"I can't tell if I'm awake or dreaming." She smiled nervously after it had been said and regretted it suddenly - her spontaneous bursts of excitement usually brought out random inappropriate comments and she couldn't help but feel that this was one of these times. She blushed a little and looked away from Ace, to the ground again, wondering how she was going to explain this away.

Ace saw Kiki's apprehension at her outburst, and he felt an unusual wave of compassion for her. It was clear to him that the girl who stood before him was as excited and overjoyed at the prospect of him staying as he was, if not more. He suddenly saw, with a flash of painful clarity, why the tension of his and Kiki's relationship had been so heart-breakingly unbearable - because at least one of their hearts had been broken.
With a slight grin, Ace reached out and touched her hand, this small symbol suggesting that everything was going to be okay. They would take it slow from here. Ace never wanted to not have Kiki in his life, and would give almost anything to transform them both into the people they had been before all this... but he couldn't. They could try and get it back, though. The friendship, the easy companionship of two complete opposites. They could meet for lunch between his Potions classes and her Ministry meetings, they could swap stories about how things used to be, she might finally be able to tell him what she hid behind those shy violet eyes and he might finally be able to tell her what life-changing thing happened the night he left.
"Definitely awake, Ki," laughed the Vampire, his eyes twinkling with new promise. "Definitely awake... I'm not going anywhere this time."
