Hayzie turned to her friend, a shocked expression on her face. Maybe her friends didn’t want her back at all. Maybe Mort had lied to her. She looked in the direction Mortimer had just walked off in. Surely he wouldn’t have lied?
Of course, she couldn’t voice what she had previously suspected and so she looked back at Kelly and asked: “What makes you say that? I can live both lives, Kel. It’ll be easy.”<br> Despite the fact the young lycan sounded one hundred percent confident in what she had said, large traces of uncertainty were still evident behind the glazed tiredness of her eyes and the confident tone of her words.

"Well, I didn't want to tell you this but -" Kelly took a deep breath, and decided on a different approach. She was about to admit that she had gone to the forest, but she didn't know how Hayzie would react.
"I mean, look at you now - you're already tired, and pale. This isn't going well, and you've only been doing it for a few days. Imagine how you could be in a few weeks, or months..." she said.
"You know you're one of my greatest friends, and if I could chose, I would have you stay up at the school. But its not up to me, it's up to you. You need to decide - are you going to stay here, or go live in the forest with the rest of...them? You know you can't keep this up forever," she explained. It killed her to say it, but it was time for Hayzie to face the facts.

Hayzie began scuffing her feet at the floor of the Entrance Hall. Deep inside, she knew Kelly was right, but she would refuse to admit it.
"I'm not tired, or pale. I'm fine" she said only half convincingly, "And I could do it Kelly. None of the lycans would need to know about it, then I could carry on with classes and still see all of you without having to worry about Mondia, Chailyn or Rikka finding you first," Hayzie carried on, still not looking up at Kelly. The confusion the blonde lycan was feeling outdid any confusion she had previously felt at all, ever.

Kelly was ready to scream out in frustration. What did Hayzie not understand?
''Hayzie, look at yourself. This isn't right." She conjured up a mirror, and held it up in front of the girl's face.
"You can't possibly tell me this is how you looked a month ago," she said. She took a deep breath - this was probably the best chance she would get.
"I know for a fact that this won't work. Somebody told me so, somebody I know is telling the truth," she paused once more, then continued. "Hayzie...I went into the forest, and met up with Mondia," she said in a rush.

Hayzie looked fleetingly into the mirror and saw that Kelly was right. The girl looking back at her through the glass wasn’t her at all. She was near enough white and a bit thinner, she looked lost and alone. A completely different person.
When Kelly commented on how she’d gone into the forest and met up with Mondia, the one who used to be her worst enemy, yet when she had entered the forest after she’d returned from St. Mungo’s, the brunette seemed to act as a mentor figure.
“Are you okay? W…What did she say?” Hayz asked, looking towards Kelly again and half dreading what the answer to her questions would be.

"I'm fine, she didn't try to hurt me," Kelly said, and made a gesture as if to swat the question away. She wanted this to stay focused on Hayzie, not herself.
"She basically said what I've been trying to tell you. She said that if a lycan tried to live two lives, it would drive them crazy - and that she wouldn't be able to fit into either crowd," she said. Each word pained her, and she was sure it was doing the same to her friend.

Stabs of pain went through Hayzie as she was told this. There was no way she would be able to sleep again tonight, no matter how tired she was. Remaining silent, the confused girl weighed up all the facts. It was obvious which path she would have to take in the end, the opposite one to the one she wanted to. She would end up taking the path leading her away from all of her friends and away from everything she knew. Hayzie Roberts would literally have to start life again in the Forbidden Forest.
It seemed weird to her that a few minutes ago, there had been hope. She knew there was a possibility she could lead both lives. That her friends would accept her back, and she would be able to trick the Lycans into thinking things were going their way – now, it looked as though none of that would be possible, despite everything Mortimer had told her mere minutes ago. Those minutes ago seemed to be days now as she drifted back into the depression she had been feeling before.
“I’ve got to go back, haven’t I, Kelly?” Hayz asked quietly, trying to force back tears. She knew Mondia was right in what she said to Kelly, and the young Lycan could almost guess the older Lycan would have also said Hayzie was supposed to stay in the forest.

Kelly sighed. Although she was fairly certain that was what would happen to the Lycan, she didn't want to seal her fate; she wanted to leave that last bit of hope for Hayzie.
"I don't know, Hayzie," she finally replied. She thought how badly she would miss her, and she had to bite her lip to force back tears - she wanted to appear strong, and try to give courage to her friend.

Hayzie nodded once, still not looking at her friend and still trying to make a hole in the stone floor with her foot. They both knew it. They both knew she would have to go back to the forest and accept the fate that had been laid out for her. But what would she say to Mondia? Why did she say that to Kelly and not to her?
Then again, Hayz had been trying to avoid the royal advisor at all costs for no reason at all. The girl wouldn't hurt her now, so what was the point in hiding?
Standing up, she decided she'd better get going before everyone woke up.
"I'll still see you around, right Kelly?" she asked, trying to stop her voice from choking. She'd cried too much on Kelly's shoulder over the past few weeks and there was no way she would do it again. And so, she turned around and began walking slowly out of the oak doors before this see you later got so emotional she did end up crying, which she felt she was about to anyway.
And so, Hayz set off for a new life in the forest - maybe never to be seen by her friends again.
