I love this idea. To prevent the melodrama, though, you could put a comical spin on it. Like, the director could be amazingly fickle and always change around the roles and always try to adjust the script, to frustrate the students so they couldn't really remember any of it, building up to disaster on opening night.
Just a thought.

another thought that could prove interesting.
We could put on, say three plays every year. We could have a drama, musical, and comedy or history. ex. Hamlet, Fiddler on the Roof, Taming of the Shrew or Richard the Third(loves Ian McClellan's Richard the Third)
It may be too many plays, but who knows? If the students like one, then they may demand for more. And if you start the play, please make it soon! I so desperately wish to act.

I was in Fiddler on the Roof! I was Perchik! Best musical I've ever been in...great fun. Even if I really didn't have a big part. I got to storm Moscow at the very least. Got beat up too. A lot.

Wicked?! WICKED!!!! I love Wicked!!!(Not the same can be said about Romeo and Juliet though...) *randomly bursts into song* No one mourns the wicked!! No one mourns the wicked! So we've got to bring them down!!
Okay, I'll stop now. Besides I could never hit that high E anyway...
But if someone starts singing "For Good," I'll either get really sad or go into a mini-rant...again.

'Tell them how I am defying gravity... Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity...'
I'm a huge wicked fan as well. Though I'd support a play of either Taming of the Shrew or Phantom of the Opera. Perhaps it should be voted upon?

Just to inform you all know, Mr. Crowe has given me the position of Co-Director. I'd just like to say that ALL of your selections have been most helpful, but Joey and I have decided that The Phantom of the Opera is a good choice for first production. The auditions will be held for one week, as Joey instructs me, starting TOMORROW, Tuesday June 28th. He will be making all the appropriate announcements tomorrow, but I do have a little morsel of information for those interested. There are a total of 14[/u] parts available ranging from large to small parts, not including people who wish to help 'backstage.' Here is the offical list I received from Joey: The Phantom ~ starring role, large, M. Christine Daae ~ starring role, large, F. La Vicomte De Chagny (Raoul) ~ starring, large, M. La Carlotta Guidicelli ~ large, F. Madame Giry ~ medium, F. Richard Firmin ~ medium, M. Gilles Andre ~ medium, M. Ubaldo Piangi ~ medium, M. Meg Giry ~ small, F. Signor (Maestro) Reyer ~ small, M. Joseph Buquet ~ small, M. Monsieur Lefevre ~ very small, M. 2 All Purpose Actors/Actresses ~ large, M/F.
PM Joey Crowe or myself for any questions. Dorion Co-Director(latte-getter)

What are the auditions going to be based on? And, ah, for those of us who haven't seen the movie, would you describe the characters?
