Troy was surprised.
When he'd seen this boy with the sword before, he'd seemed deft, skilled. But now his moves were clumsy, with little to no technique. This one, for example, was little more than a hack. Still, even a clumsy blow could be dangerous if it connected. This blow, a downward stroke aimed at his left shoulder, was one that was begging to be blocked.
First rule of dueling: Never give them what they ask for.
Troy dived to his right, launching off his bare feet into the air. He was aiming to his right and slightly forward, once more behind the other boy. In mid air he turned slightly and slapped the boy across the rump with the flat of his blade. He hit the floor on his shoulder, rolled slid fluidly to his feet.
Troy was grinning now. He was enjoying this. He hadn't had a proper duel in a while; but although this was fun, he did yearn for a little more competition. He took up his defensive stance once more, now several feet from the other boy, grinning openly, his green eyes flashing.
Once more.

"Oh!" Zowan jumped slightly, surprised at the somewhat comical strike. He turned around to face Troy again with a grin on his face. Yes, he would definitely ask this boy to train him.
But first, he wanted to lose terribly to him. He wanted Troy to hurt him, he wanted to fall to the floor, hell, he wanted to bleed. He didn't care about the people watching. He just wanted someone to put him back in his place, wanted the world to fall back to its recognizable form.
Come on, buddy. Don't hold back anymore. Show me what you can do.

Kage looked back and forth. He too had noticed that the one boy was becoming more and more clumsy, as if begging for a loss. 'What is he trying to prove?' Kage thought silently.

As Zowan grinned over at him, Troy grinned back, lifting his blade slightly in an informal salute. He was certain this boy could do better... but, obviously, he didn't want to.
His loss.
The grin disappeared and Troy's gaze became intense once more. He shifted his grip on the sword slightly, before lunging in, feinting to the boy's right and twirling the blade up and around in an overarm slash at Zowan's left shoulder.
The strike was carefully planned. The last thing he wanted to do was seriously injure the boy or, God forbid, kill him. If he failed to blcok or dodge the blow it would give him a surface wound, nothing more - but it would serve as a reminder.
Do better next time.

Even as shy as she was, Vivian generally wasn't the kind to completely blow people off, but she was far too fixated on the sword fighting pair to really want to pay much or any heed to the girl that was trying to be friendly. In hindsight, it probably wasn't the best thing for her to do if she wanted to break herself out of this hole she'd dug herself into, but at the moment, annoyance was fraying that subconscious habit of being polite.
Finally, guilt overrode her desperation to just be able to stare, transfixed, and she muttered a polite "N-n-no th-thanks," before turning her gaze back, not bothering to sit. Viv wasn't all that fond of sitting still for long periods of time, prefering to be able to move at a moment's notice. It would be a lot easier for her to dive from a standing position if, for example, one of their swords was accidentally tossed her way, than if she was sitting down and limited by the presense of the chair in the directions she could fall.
This was quickly becoming quite the zoo, and she debated just leaving for the sake of getting out of the way of all these people. She'd never fared too well in crowds, especially one that was excitable as one watching an amazing battle of swords. It seemed now that everyone wanted in on the battle, wanted to vent their own frustrations. The two boys were battling magnificently, but she saw the movements of the first becoming more clumsy, less precise and planned. She winced and snorted at the same time as she both heard and saw the flat of the sword slap against Zowan's rear end, torn between sympathy and amusement. It would be a humiliating blow to most, but he seemed for the most part unphased. Part of her got the feeling that he wanted to lose. Or maybe he just wasn't good at sword fighting as he'd originally appeared.
Viv held back a gasp as Troy slashed at the boy's shoulder, a blow that could have devastating consequences if either made just the slightest wrong move. Now she was definitely stuck here for good, staring wide eyed at the battle, just glad she wasn't there in front of so many spectators, performing daring feats that she would never even attempt.

Kage ached to reach in and deflect the blow. Obviously the one boy's heart wasn't in the match, and it would serve no purpose for the humiliation to continue. Kage actually leaned one sword against one of the chairs, and was poised to draw his other sword, but he decided to wait.

Zowan's grin slid off his face just as Troy's had, and he took up a defensive stance, his knees bent slightly, sword in front of him. Troy was talented, yes, but this was no grudge match, and it suddenly occurred to Zowan that his guilt about hitting Branden held no sway in this fight. This fight was not about guilt, or anger. It was about technique, and skill, and about proving himself. Sure, he'd never been trained, but he wasn't going to go down without even trying.
The sword flying at his right shoulder faintly registered. Zowan could hear nothing, could see only the glint of the metal flying at him. He lifted his sword to defend himself, and saw Troy's blade glide in what seemed like slow motion over his head to his left shoulder.
Zowan reacted on pure instinct. He stepped nimbly to the right and brought his sword high in an arc and then down onto Troy's. His blade kept the same path, fluidly forcing Troy's down toward the floor. Then, in a moment, Zowan had lifted his sword again and pointed it at Troy's chest.
Was that any better?
