Persephone sighed deeply, the breath being forced back into her body. She sat back down in her chair, and looked up at him, and let down her walls. She was vulnerable sitting there. Something about her sitting there looked like a child.
"Well, ok. I guess I should start...with the beginning. Well, when my little sister Allena was born, my father died. I hardly knew him, or remember him, but what I know if him was that he was caring man. About four years later my mother died. She used to call me...dear heart...no one else has.
After," for a moment Persephone seemed to loose the ability to seak but she gulped in air, "after that, my twin sister Ariadne ,and my little sister Allena, and myself went to live in an orphanage. It was ok, to begin with, but then Allena was adopted, I almost never saw her again...until I got here. But all those years when I was little I spent taking care of Ariadne. She was my only family, and I wanted to protect her. I guess I was robbed of my childhood, and after awhile, when it became apparent that we weren't going to be adopted, we became slaves to the orphanage.
I suppose that doesn't sound so bad, but..."
She didn't know what else to say. When she said it like that, it sounded so small and insignificant. It was almost as if...her parents just weren't that important, and she hated thinking about that.

Barnett stood there in silence, an unreadable expression on his face. Waiting until he was sure she had finished, he sank back into a seat.
"I see," he rumbled slowly. "That - must be rough. Family is so important. They're a wall put up, to keep you from all that's bad, and -" He stopped himself, rubbing the back of his neck uncomfortably. "How did you end up here, then?" He asked her slowly, unsure whether it was proper to dwell on the sobering subject matter.
He gazed at her cautiously. He often treated women who may cry as ticking bombs.

"Like many students, I received a letter here. I had no idea about the fact that myself and my twin were witches. Then when we arrived we found our parents had left us a great deal of money. From that point on we got jobs, and then...we attended here. We became pretty self-sufficient. We didn't...think we need anyone, and the struggle to live took away any hurt, or at least...it numbed it."
She didn't look into Barnett's eyes. She knew he really didn't know how to handle it. How were you supposed to? Most conversations didn't end up this way, she knew that, and now he was in an awkward spot.

((If I ever take a while to respond to something, just give me a kick via PM. Chances are I've lost track of our thread. Sorry!))
He nodded grimly. "You and your sister sound to me like heroes." He concluded after a while. "I suppose I can understand why you like to fight fire with fire." He tugged on his ear, smiling awkwardly at her.
Feeling the edge of their debate slowly draining from him, he sighed and slumped back in his chair. He tapped his temple lightly with his index finger, appearing to be mulling things over. He was really trying to figure out the proper procedures for the case scenario. "Well," he cleared his throat. "I apologize for any insensitivity and all I can really do is offer you my condolences for your loss. And maybe - a reschedule for that debate of ours?" He smiled weakly.

Persephone smiled slowly. She never minded a debate. It got out stress...and got points across in a civil manner. Glad that they could debate at another time, she felt slightly less hurt. Barnett really wasn't a bad guy. She noticed that now, but still, he wasn't the closest of her friends.
"It's ok...and I wouldn't mind rescheduling our debate. Perhaps next time, we'll have more to work off of...and a better subject?"
