Professor Shelley Barches stood by her desk calmly, watching the students file into her classroom. If someone particularly observant had regarded her they would have seen a slight glimmer of mischief in her eye as she surveyed the class. It just so happens that there are many observant wizards and witches enrolled at Magic Horizons, so a good majority of the class was already searching for the source of her amusement as they sat down. Most came to the conclusion that the huge, cloth-covered object on her desk was the reason behind her glint, and so most were watching with anticipation, fear, or both, as she closed the door and walked over to her desk. "Welcome, my bonny bumpkins, to Care of Magical Creatures," she said suddenly, and her strong voice filled the room. It had a prominent Scottish burr, and held a note of barely-contained glee in its tones. A general stirring went through the assembled group. Somethign was afoot. "Now, put away your books like the good children y'are. True to me promise, we won't be using them today - though you might want to keep out some parchment. I daresay you'll want to take some notes down." Her smile grew bigger as the class put their textbooks back in their bags. Uneasy glances were flitting right and left. "This year - and this is the part ye'll want to write down - we are going to be learnin' in many ways. I bring in the critters, you learn about them by experience and yar books, we'll have tests and quizzes, and perhaps, if y'are good, I might take you on some bonny fun trips. "But, sometimes, if I decide a creature is intertin' enough to keep us occupied, we'll have units. These units will cover at least two classes, where we'll study one type of creature 'til it's comin' out of yer ears." She grinned widely. "Today happens to be one of those classes." The Professor closed her hand around the cream-coloured fabric that covered the object on her desk. The students leaned forward, buzzing. Their suspicions were confirmed. 'T'day," she said, and her grin grew to an amazing size, "Today and at least the next class, we will be studying - " she lifted the cloth, and the entire student body gasped - "The Phoenix." ((Picture this on a perch, in a HUGE (and I mean huge) cage)) OOC: Post comments and reactions to the surpirse below. This will be a kind of....open discussion class.

Mary's eyes were wide open, she started at the Phoenix shocked "but Professor.." she called "how did you get one? It's very hard to trap a Phoenix!" she still was shocked.

Skarlet did as the Professor instructed and began to take notes. She then stopped for her curiosity turned to the cloth, and when the professor un-clothed her mystery Skarlet was in awe. "It's beautiful, but how did you get it?"

Marina seemed to remember attending this class once before, could remember this Professor. Care of Magical Creatures was always a very fun and hands on class, and she was always quite fond of it. Her excitement was plain on her face as she strode down the corridor, just a little behind schedule after packing up after her prior class. Despite the fact that classes were already fully started and it was only the first day, she seemed entirely content to be busy and on the move, though her hand was about ready to fall off from all the writing she’d been doing.
She was still one of the earlier students to find their way to the class, and she settled in at the front of the class, waiting anxiously for Professor Barches to start the class, eyeing the odd object on the woman’s desk warily, wondering what it was and if it had any importance to the class. Somehow, Nina got the feeling that it did from the Professor’s expression, and she scarcely looked up from it as she sorted her things in her bag, making sure that she had everything that she could have possibly needed for the class before setting it carefully on the floor, with a quill and a bottle of ink conveniently on top if she would just so happen to need it.
Finally, when the class had finally filled in, she directed her attention fully to the Professor, grinning from ear to ear as she waited for the cloth to be removed, to see whatever creature might be hidden within. Until then, she was happy enough to listen to the instructor talk about the lesson, becoming more and more excited with every passing moment. She glanced quickly around the class, her dark green eyes catching the different looks on the faces of her peers. Finally, she caught her breath as the teacher went to remove the cloth.
The Phoenix.
Her eyes widened almost comically, and then settled as she exhaled a deep, almost audible sigh at the sight of the beautiful creature. Smiling slowly, she sat, staring transfixed at the creature caged on the desk, wanting almost to reach up and touch it, to see if the feathers were hot to the touch.
“Brilliant!” she exclaimed, her voice sounding every bit as awestruck as she was in reality. Marina knew a lot about phoenixes, because she had developed a small obsession earlier on in her school career and done extensive research on the subject. There were so many amazing things they could do, and they really looked so spectacular in real life. She was as close to speechless as you could ever get, and she had to forcibly shut her jaw, listening dully to the comment of the girl who had spoken before her.
“I do believe I am going to enjoy the next couple of classes…” Nina remarked softly, standing up slightly and leaning just a bit closer to get a better look, glancing up quickly to the Professor, beaming with a grin, eyes lit up with glee at actually getting to see such a creature. She’d have to thank the woman after class. She would have asked how the woman got it, but it seemed that the question had been posed several times over, and it would be pointless to ask it again.

Arwen arrived to class breathless. She had ran the whole way there to make sure she arrived in time.Walking in through the door she noticed the amused gleam in the teacher's eyes.Taking a seat she pulled out a quill and parchment ready to take any notes. Her silvery blue gaze was drawn to the cloth-covered object. As the teacher began to speak, she snapped her gaze to her paying rapt attention.
When Professor Barches pulled off the cloth to reveal its hidden contents she gasped loudly. "Ed' i'ear ar' elenea! It's positively beautiful" she exclaimed excitedly " Where on Earth did you get it?" Her eyes were wide with excitement as she gazed at the magnifiscant Pheonix, and its beautifully colored feathers.

Shelley watched the scene in contentment, glad that the reaction was everything she could have hoped for.
"Aye," she nodded, "she is quite beautiful. I went to visit a friend of mine this summer, name o' Harris, who lives up in the mountains." She shrugged. "I promised that I wouldn't tell you scallywags exactly where. Harris, he's a good chap, wonderful with the animals, but not right up in 'is head. Thinks ev'ryone's out to git 'im." She moved a hand through the wide bars and stroked the bird's scarlet cheek. "He has a regl'ar menagrie up there, with almost every creature he could possibly keep under control. And Auren here is his pride and joy."
Shaking her wild red hair out of her eyes, she gave a reminisent grin. "I had to move Heaven and Earth to convince him to lend her to me, and even now she has to be back by 6 o'clock on the dot.
"But c'mon, let's talk about her, not her orgins. Or rather her orgins, but not her Orgins. Or...well. Can anyone of ye tell me where the Phoenix lives, when they're wild?"

Ribbon had been twirling bits of her ponytail distractedly while waiting for class to begin but the second Professor Barches opened her mouth she dropped the bit that she had twisted and picked up her quill. Upon hearing the Professor's accent she smiled to herself. She had always loved that particular vocal intonation. Having anticipated this class happily ever since coming to school she took careful, neat notes and wondered what in the world the cream cloth was hiding. She figured it must be a magical creature of some kind because that was obviously the subject of the class.
When the shining bird was revealed she gasped in wonder. All the facts she had memorized about the supposedly mythological creature flew through her head, even though she was muggle born she had always been interested in the things muggle science said couldn't exist. Her amazement was so great she couldn't make a sound but her thoughts sped around her brain. *I thought this would be one of the few classes where we would have busywork. How did she catch it? Maybe she befriended it? I wonder what part of its cycle its in? Judging from the exquisite plumage and large size it is probably in or near its prime, not that I'm any kind of judge.* All of these thought presented themselves to her almost immediately and she a moment later discovered that she had been holding her breath, she shook her head to clear her thoughts for what the teacher would tell them next and took carefully moderated breaths.

Skarlet raised her hand, but couldn't hold it in anymore, she loved answering questions. "The Phoenix Professor Barches nests on mountain peaks and is found in Egypt, India, and China." She answered in her English voice, hopefully to be right.

Talon was quickly amazed by the sight of the Phoenix, his face covered in disbelief. Phoenix Kid, his name was in some places, because his travelling companion, his familiar, was a Phoenix. And he smirked when Professor Barches refered to the Phoenix as 'she'.
"The Bird of Paradise, holy swan of song. Is that not what the ancient poets wrote of this creature?" spoke Talon, rising from his seat. "The Phoenixes originated in the Garden of Eden, or so they say, and Phoenixes now dwell in the Middle East. The myth of the Phoenix goes way back to Ancient Egypt, for on the walls of Tombs they find pictures of this bird."
Talon smiled, looking around. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get that far into it." He sat back down again quickly, putting his face in his hands.

Genevieve stood silently behind the group of students, looking at the beautiful bird. She had never seen one before. She wondered to herself about what the bird was used for and what powers it had.

Kilik got as close as he could staring in amazement at the magnificent bird, "Wow... a Phoenix", Kilik said Kilik slowly raised his hand and began reciting what he knew, Phoenix, the Phoenix is a scarlet colored bird found in India, China, and Egypt, the Phoenix can live a long time it can regenerate; it bursts into flames when it starts to fail and a phoenix chick is found in the ashes, the Phoenix is not known to kill as it is not carnivouris and only eats herbs, it can disapear and reappear at will, the Phoenixes Tears and Song are both highly magical.
Kilik grinned at the thought of that this was his best explanation yet.

Ribbon smiled at Kilik but also added on to the end of his. "The Phoenix fails as Kilik put it every 500 years and is reborn from its own ashes although I wouldn'y call it failing. It builds itself a dying pyre out of fragrant wood and the reborn phoenix embalms its ashes in an egg of myrr, supposedly to deposite it in Heliopolis but I'm not sure if that was something muggles made up. It is also said that the poenix is the living embodiment of a solar eclipe due to the pattern rays of light make in the sky. It is used in many cultures as a symbol fro immortality, rebirth, and resurection." She looked slightly uncomfortable because except for the 500 year thing she wasn't sure if it wasn't something that muggles made up to add to an already amazing creature. She had been raise as a muggle so all she knew was what she had learned during her long term fetishes.

Conan's eyes widen in shock at the amazing bird. "Professor, I thought Phoenix was a protected animal. And HOw are they hard to catch??" he asked Prof. Barches. He continued to stare at the beautiful Phoenix.
